Production risk eliminated for users of advanced EMI shielding polymers and thermal interface materials as Parker Chomerics extends its integrated assembly services globally


T


he Chomerics Division of Parker Hannifin Corporation, the global leader in motion and control technologies, has extended the scope of its integrated assembly services for users of polymer-based EMI shielding solutions, thermal interface materials (TIM) and shielded optical display solutions, in response to increased demand from customers that have a global footprint.


Parker Chomerics’ integrated assembly service is highly valued by some of the world’s largest automotive, military and aerospace, consumer and industrial equipment manufacturers, as it provides a simplified supply chain, lean production efficiencies, superior quality and the elimination of the production risk and financial inefficiencies which can be associated with the application of complex materials. Comprehensive integration of all Parker Chomerics’ design and production capabilities globally for shielding solutions, TIMs and optical display solutions enables large OEMs to partner with Chomerics to produce a fully integrated assembly that best suits the customer’s global footprint, whether in Asia, the Americas or Europe. The Chomerics service is an alternative to the standard manufacturing model by which an OEM procures advanced materials such as thermal gels, pre-moulded/form-in- place/extruded gasketing or engineered plastic housings, installs the appropriate production equipment, and produces the entire assembly in its own factory. The Chomerics integrated assembly service replaces this: instead, Chomerics pre-assembles and dispenses its products into a housing, heatsink assembly or substrate and delivers a custom product or sub-system according to the customer’s design specification. The sub-system


incorporates the specialist materials for which Chomerics is renowned, such as engineered plastics, compounds and coatings, some of which require specialist processing to guarantee quality and functionality. By partnering with Chomerics to produce a finished assembly, OEMs can: • benefit from the deep technical expertise of Chomerics in the dispensing and curing of sophisticated materials such as form-in-place gaskets, single-component gels and engineered electrically conductive plastics. • reduce a complex materials requirement of tens of parts down to a single stock keeping unit (SKU). • reduce the size of inventory and eliminate a layer of inventory management processes. • rely on the Chomerics guarantee of quality, supporting customers’ processes such as the automotive industry’s PPAP scheme and aerospace and defence certifications. The global configuration of the Chomerics service allows customers anywhere in the world to design a sub-assembly including EMI shielding solutions and TIMs, and then partner with Chomerics to assemble it in either North America, Europe or Asia as is most appropriate for their requirements.

TTI invests in Supply Chain 4.0 T


TI is getting its European headquarters in Maisach-Gernlinden ready for the future with a new office building and a massive extension of its existing distribution centre. With the new buildings TTI now has more than 30.000sqm of warehouse space and 8.000sqm of office space available to them. However the challenge of the project wasn’t only the extension of the available space but of the used warehouse volume. With the planning of a new concept and the integration of the already existing facility TTI was able to realise an extension of the useable room volume by factor 3. To be fully prepared for the future the new buildings have been generously planned, so that at the beginning only 60 per cent of the available space will be used and the remaining space will readily be available for use at a later stage. About 23 million Euros are being invested in latest warehouse technology and the implementation of integrated Supply Chain 4.0. Already now the distributor communicates with nearly all its suppliers via different EDI standards and more than 700 customers are also already connected with TTI through sophisticated logistics solutions.


The existing pallet racking will be extended into a concept with narrow forklift trucks and a height of 15 metres. In the first phase this will offer 21.000 pallet bays and with a possible further extension even 32.000 bays.


In addition to conventional racking technology the extension will also include an autostore-system with 110.000 containers, which can also be doubled in a further extension. The autostore-system in the first phase consists


of 50 robots, powered by silent electric motors, which provide the goods automatically at the 24 picking stations.

already today and will be supported at the picking stations by a put-to-light system guaranteeing a high quality of commissioning. The consolidation of orders in the two-stage commissioning from now on will be done automatically via a shuttle system with a total of 8.000 container positions which can be extended to 12.000 positions in the future. Compared to classical AKL-solutions the shuttle system offers a higher performance and an optimal use of space with lower service and maintenance costs. To increase efficiency and for optimal use of the transport vehicles in the shipping process there is an automatic volume optimisation and labeling of parcels. This saves shipping costs and is environmentally friendly.


By planning the extension in two stages as well as the combination of different storage systems and a mix of manual operations as well as automisation, TTI expects an increase in efficiency and a very high flexibility when reacting to future developments in the market.

New thermally conductive dispensable PCM interface paste, 3.5W/m.K

he latest addition to the thermal interface material range from European Thermodynamics is the phase change material GCS- TRP35-PCM.


How does it work?


Ideally suited to fill spaces of up to 0.15mm, the GCS-TRP35-PCM phase change thermal interface material is used to pervade air gaps/voids between two surfaces. This provides full thermal contact in order to cool critical electronic components, for example on a printed circuit board.


Overall thermal conductivity of an embedded system is enhanced as heat is allowed to flow through the system and disperse. This allows the electronics to function as intended. Increased component density and smaller form factor engineering designs are now possible. Developed and manufactured in the UK, GCS-TRP35-PCM has a thermal conductivity of 3.5W/m.K. It’s RoHS approved, non-toxic, thixotropic (non-drip) formula means no messy application. It is available as a paste in 100g pots.
