Q&A

Q: Which footwear/fashion shows do you attend, and how do you rate them? Are you planning to attend any shows next year? A: In the past I have attended shoe trade shows in Italy. I love them; there’s always so much to see and all the shoes are fabulous! Then, in January next year I will be travelling to Florence to visit the Pitti Show, which I’m looking forward to.

Q: Do you have a favourite footwear agent you can tell us about? A: I have some lovely agents, which makes my job easier, and I can’t say that I have an absolute favourite, but somebody who is very special to me is Rob Sewell from Art – he’s my ‘go to’ when I have a problem and he’s always helpful. I also do love the brands he sells, particularly Art, which sells extremely well in my shop.

Q: Have you always had a passion for footwear? How many pairs of shoes do you own? A: Yes absolutely! I own around 200 pairs of shoes and boots and I love them all, particularly my Fly London trainers and my Art loafers!

Q: Have you had any famous customers in your shop? A: I don’t have any famous customers – I’m fine with all the customers that I have, they’re all fantastic and I can honestly say that I’ve never had a bad customer! But, if anybody famous wants to visit my shop, he or she is more than welcome!

Q: How do you think the Government could best help footwear retailers at this difficult time, i.e., lower business rates, rents, VAT etc? A: The problem for small businesses is the footfall through the door and the amount that people are willing to spend. A lot of the time people are waiting for sales, which is no good for small businesses. Bank Holidays are all very well, but for small businesses, we must pay staff double time or close the shop for the day. We lose business when everybody else is having a holiday, so I think that should be reflected in some way by the Government to help small businesses.

Q: Do you have any plans for the year ahead? A: My plan is to open my newly refitted shop in January

and grow the business from there. I’m also quite looking forward to not opening seven days a week; I’ve decided to open just five days a week. It’s been a tough 12 months, but I really feel that I’m getting there!
