Automation connects with Peter Dent, managing director of LEMO UK... A

utomation: How did LEMO evolve to become the successful company that it is now?

Peter Dent: LEMO’s rise over the past 70 years from a small engineering company in Morges, Switzerland, to the global interconnect leader it is today, is down to many factors. Over three generations, this family-owned business has retained a common ethos that has served it

extremely well; the commitment to uncompromising quality, the continual introduction of innovative products, the retention of a self- sufficient centralised manufacturing model, the continual expansion of a dispersed global sales model offering local value-added services and an investment plan based on the long-term objectives. This strategy is all part of the company’s DNA, which has underpinned LEMO’s success.

A: Which industries does LEMO cover? PD: The industries LEMO covers are: medical, broadcast, defence, industrial automation, test and measurement, nuclear, motorsport, security and policing, and energy. In summary, LEMO is typically used in critical applications where health and safety is imperative, and failure is not an option.

A: Why is it important to LEMO to serve such a broad range of requirements? PD: Serving a broad range of markets is important from several aspects in as much as it makes the business less susceptible to market fluctuations. It maximises the return on investment with adjacent selling practices and it broadens the company’s knowledge base, keeping it up to date, in the present and enhancing future-proof R&D.

A: Which of LEMO’s brands are geared to cater specifically for industrial automation? PD: LEMO’S core ranges are used across multiple markets including automation. With the continual deployment, increased sophistication and

business reliance on factory automation, we are continually finding this a rich source of growth for the group.

A: How does the company ensure it delivers what’s expected throughout the process of designing and tailoring connectors and cabling for industrial automation? PD: General applications for LEMO connectors within the automation market are focused around robotics. With increased sensors etc, there are numerous applications where a LEMO connector is an ideal choice due to its operational performance characteristics, versatility and high quality.

A: LEMO covers technology for the future, medical being an example of this. What does the future hold for LEMO and how does the company see connector technology developing over the next ten years? PD: For the automation market, LEMO predominately promotes the use of standard components assembled or configured into customer specific products. This approach aligns the business need to offer low risk, quick turn-around solutions to this fast-paced industry. Technology and market drivers are continually evolving at ever

increasing rates. Some of the changes might be quite surprising at first glance, but one thing that is constant is that we will need to continually evolve to meet the everchanging needs of our customers and, effectively the end users. From a connector technology standpoint, the medical market is throwing up some interesting challenges in as much as a more onerous/tougher market approval process will make customers less inclined to take unnecessary product development risks. An ageing population coupled with an ever-evolving health system

which will rely more on home care/patient monitoring could lead to the needs of the end user changing, rapidly. Whatever the next ten years bring, LEMO has placed itself in a position

to provide cost effective and innovative solutions for OEM engineers and system designers.
