PILOT PLANT HELPS ACCELERATE COMMERCIALISATION
Automation consultancy GB Innomech (Innomech) has designed and developed a pilot-scale production system for Aston Particle Technologies (APT) that will help the company accelerate the commercialisation of its innovative dry particle coating technology for use within the pharmaceutical industry. APT is developing a one-step particle
engineering technology to enable ‘challenging’ active pharmaceutical ingredients to be dry powder coated onto carrier particles: without needing heat, solvents or pressure. Target applications include the development of new dry powder inhaler formulations, improving the solubility of poorly water-soluble drugs, and developing taste-masking solutions for bitter- tasting drugs. Innomech has designed the new easy-to-use
system to process up to 2Kg of pharmaceutical powders which is a 100-fold increase on the capacity of APT’s existing lab- scale, proof of principle equipment. The system provides a fluidised environment for particle contact and adsorption of cohesive material over coarse particles without the need for solvent and heat. Pressure and temperature sensors, and an efficient heat exchanger are used to monitor and maintain the required process conditions. A touchscreen integrated with a recipe-based control system allows operators to quickly and easily call up and store the required process
CABLE ASSEMBLY EXPANSION
To meet the growing demand for “plug and play” interconnect solutions, LEMO (UK) is pleased to announce a 50% expansion of its UK cable assembly service. This investment is part of an initiative the company has undertaken to support the growing manufacturing trend for OEM’s to outsource their non-core connector termination activities. As part of this expansion, the company has
conditions for specific production batches. The system has been designed for easy cleaning and maintenance by minimising the surfaces and gas flow paths that come into contact with pharmaceutical powders, and it uses a HEPA filtration system to ensure operator safety. “Innomech is the perfect system

The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) has huge potential: predictive maintenance, asset information management and device configuration are just some examples of the opportunities digitalisation has in store for companies. Endress+Hauser’s dedication to driving IIoT forward has been proven twice recently – winning the Digital Champion Award and presenting a new digital platform at the German Digital Summit. The company’s Memosens was presented
with the Digital Champion Award in the category Digital Products and Services in June 2017. The award is a joint initiative of the German telecommunications provider Telekom and the business magazine WirtschaftsWoche. Memosens sensors measure the pH-value in liquids, for example, and transform it into a digital signal while still in the sensor. The data is then passed on via a contactless system and provides accurate, reproducible and reliable measurement results. Furthermore, the technology combines high process and data
security with simple handling: it can withstand corrosion and moisture, can be calibrated in the laboratory and enables predictive maintenance. Endress+Hauser also demonstrates its
commitment to IIoT through its work with partners: the company created a platform through which data can be exchanged together with BASF, SAP, Pepperl+Fuchs and SAMSON. This was presented for the first time at the Digital Summit of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Technology. The platform enables new forms of data-
based cooperation. The ability to gather data on the condition of devices and components and exchanging this data with all those involved with chemical processing helps determine maintenance requirements and reduce plant shutdowns. Endress+Hauser has combined its activities
