PRODUCTS & APPLICATIONS PUMPS, VALVES & ACTUATORS A CHOCOLATE CHALLENGE

A leading European chocolatier recently approached Triark Pumps with the challenging task of finding a pump that could handle a troublesome medium, namely chocolate, with the addition of 'inclusions', such as nuts and raisins. Unfortunately, the overall choices

were limited given the need for an electrically operated pump (Air Operated Double Diaphragm (AODD) pumps were ruled out due to the lack of a localised compressed air supply), that could run slow (due to the shear sensitive nature of chocolate), handle solids (nuts and raisins) and be heated, so that the chocolate wouldn’t cool during the normal running cycle, or when the system stopped for any reason. After carrying out extensive

research, Triark supplied two Desmi Rotan 2” positive displacement internal gear pumps. Each pump was flexibly coupled to an SEW 1.5 kW, IP55, EFF1 gear motor and mounted on a fabricated ‘top hat’ style stainless steel base plate, with a stainless steel coupling guard. David Rozée, managing director,

Triark Pumps, said, “Desmi has built an enviable reputation in the manufacture of pumps for the food and drink sector, so not only did the eventual selection provide a quality solution which to date has been running without issue, it also provided the most cost effective option, enabling us to tick every box on the original brief.”

PUMPS PROVIDE SLURRY SAVINGS AT AD PLANT

A macerator and two pumps from Börger are helping provide slurry handling savings at a farm-based AD plant in Lincolnshire. Part of a custom-built container

system designed and built by Gissing FE, the macerator handles digestate from the farm’s lagoon, whilst the new rotary lobe pumps have replaced inefficient centrifugal units. Requiring just the one generator

to power three electric motors, Gissing’s space-saving (20’ by 15’, including pipework) container system reduces emissions for a spreading operation that would usually need two to three large tractors, plus the diesel and manpower to go with it.

“Previously,” said Jason Gissing,

the farmer had to have three centrifugal pumps in line, which with three lots of fuel, was very inefficient. The impellers on this design of pump will only spin so fast without being able to handle the digestate from the AD plant –

ACTUATOR DEVELOPED FOR OIL FIELD

Rotork has received an order for 220 pneumatic actuators for the NASR Phase II Full Field Development Project in the UAE. The aim of the project is to increase the field's oil production capacity to 65,000 barrels per day (BPD) from the existing capacity of 22,000 BPD. Awarded by Hyundai Heavy Industries, the order included

spring-return pneumatic actuators to operate 30" and 36" Class 1500 ball valves, with the specification that the maximum actuator output torque at a design pressure of 9.4 bar should not be in excess of 90% of the valves’ maximum allowable stem torque. Due to the huge force required to compress the spring, this

requirement is beyond the performance limits of the standard range of Rotork GP pneumatic actuators. However, faced with this challenge, the Rotork Research & Development department successfully created an innovative and simple solution. The resulting actuator is the largest GP350 actuator built to-date, with a total length of 8.5m and weighing 19 tonnes.

The recently launched HP high pressure rotary valve from DMN- WESTINGHOUSE in now available in the UK. Due to its design, there is hardly any product degradation and reduced axial air leakage. In fact, the company says there is up to a third less air leakage than other standard high pressure valves. The valve is able to run at

pressures up to 3.5 bar g, and because of the minimal degradation as product travels through the valve, energy costs are reduced by cutting air leakage

by up to 33%. The HP valve bodies and the twelve bladed, standard full end disc rotor are manufactured from 316 stainless steel, while the end covers are made from aluminium in order to reduce wear. Maintenance is simplified as the end covers have outboard bearings which are lubricated and sealed for life and the special construction of the shaft sealing guarantees the lowest air leakage. All models offer optimum venting through a large vent hole, so a maximum product flow into the

vented pockets is guaranteed. SEW drives are fitted as standard. Currently, the valves are

available in three sizes - 200mm, 250mm and 300mm.

This month, KSB’s Luxembourg subsidiary SISTO Armaturen S.A. will launch a new double-acting or single- acting pneumatic actuator, designed for diaphragm valves used for sterile applications in the beverage, food and pharmaceutical industries. A feature of the MD30-MD202 actuator range is that the actuator housing and the valve bonnet are made from a single piece of material. Compared with predecessor models, this reduces the actuator’s overall height so that less space is required to accommodate block-bodied multi-port valves. The actuators are also 45% lighter than the two-piece design. In addition to the stainless steel variant, the two largest actuator sizes are also available in aluminium. The actuator can be fitted to the valve body without nuts as the threads are integrated in the body. The orientation of the air connection can be adjusted in 90° steps. A range of accessories can be retrofitted by the operator, and the actuators can be replaced with manual actuation bonnets at any time.

and they were also heavy on wearing parts and very time- consuming to service. “However, with the self-priming Börger pumps, they hold their pressure much longer to supply a higher volume of slurry – and with their Maintenance-In-Place design, are much, much easier to service – half the time or less than the centrifugal pumps.” The Börger pumps can be started, stopped, revved up and down – all from the operator’s cab – from where the driver can also see what flow rates are being achieved, and if necessary, divert.
