POWER ELECTRONICS FEATURE

GET THE BEST

POWER SUPPLY FOR YOUR APPLICATION

Finding the best fit, power product that offers both the right level of power density and reliability for the given application, can be tricky, but get it right and you can achieve the competitive edge. Knowledge is ‘power’ when negotiating the breadth of market offerings as Larry Tracey, Director, FiDUS Power explains

A

lthough the power supply market does have some big manufacturing

names, there are also a plethora of small manufacturers, many of them whom have little or no ‘brand’ outside their immediate customer base. Such smaller companies do not pretend to offer a wide range of products, instead they focus on a sometimes very narrow niche; however, for that niche they produce a power supply with extraordinary capability. Sometimes it’s all about size; in other cases a PSU may offer class-leading EMC or thermal performance. Others beat industry records for efficiency. But how does the design engineer go about finding the manufacturer of these products, especially if he may be unaware that such a product exists? FiDUS Power was formed in 2015 to address this challenge. The company’s founding directors have over 50 years' experience in specifying and sourcing power products from across the globe and now offer a full range of industrial and medical AC-DC power supplies and DC-DC converters from large and smaller manufacturers. The company leverages its expertise to work with the best product design engineers and trusted manufacturing partners worldwide to develop innovative products, driving efficiency and cost. This enables it to provide high quality power products at much lower costs than its competitors. The company’s manufacturing partners produce more than 500 million units per year in their world-class ISO 9001 certified facilities. Where applicable,

products meet UL, CSA, CE, TÜV and CB standards. Medical grade power products meet IEC 60601-1 3rd Edition (AM1:2012) and some products are available with BF rating. Because it can be sure of its manufacturing partners, all the company’s products come with its own five year warranty (non-Murata products). At a time when other companies are

cutting back on the technical support that they offer, FiDUS Power has recruited a team of engineers with knowledge across a wide range of power applications to provide expert advice for product selection and after sales support. Its industry knowledge includes motor, pump and automation applications - including machine vision and sensors. With detailed product knowledge, its support engineers can provide advice on input ranges, peak power outputs, thermal envelopes and potential modifications from standard.

FROM SMALL TO BIG Although many of the manufacturing partners that FiDUS Power works with are – as we have said – smaller companies, very recently the company signed with one of the largest names in the power supply world – Murata Power. The deal not only enables FiDUS Power to supply Murata’s range of medium and high power DC/DC, and AC/DC products, it also gives FiDUS access to Murata’s full suite of technical support resources. Today, various technologies are

requiring energy-efficient systems and higher performance in a smaller package.

technology to the market, and in this respect, Murata is a highly exciting addition to its linecard. Two recent examples of technology leadership products that have emerged from Murata Power are the very compact 1U D1U86P-W-220 AC/DC 2.2kW front end, and the PQC250 250W convection-cooled switching power supply, which is again space-saving. Another example of a product that

provides real performance differentiation comes from one of its smaller manufacturing partners which offers miniature, 3x5in PSUs that can deliver 250W when conduction-cooled or 550W fan-cooled, and are approved for industrial and medical use. FiDUS Power is always on the hunt for a power product that gives the electronics design engineer a real competitive edge with their next project. Truly the world’s PSU makers are excelling themselves and it is our task to ensure that the engineering community has access to the best range of PSUs possible. The company challenges itself to help design engineers not only choose the best product for their application, but also to use it in the most beneficial way – which requires a thorough understanding of the market.
