FEATURE INTERCONNECTION
THE MOVE TO DEFINE RAIL CONNECTORS
Roberto Bonacina, global product manager 0f ITT Veamexplores how advanced rail interconnects are providing true modularity and enabling power, signal and data in a single circular connector
W
ith over five decades of servicing the industry with its rail circular
connectors, having defined the market with its ruggedised design and performance, operating reliably in harsh environments, ITT Veam are about to do it again in 2019. This time, with a completely modular, space efficient circular interconnect that enhances versatility and delivers power, signal and data - all at the same time. The ITT Veam MOVE Series is the
company’s next-generation, all-in-one circular connector. Although developed for rail, this series is ideal for harsh environment, industrial applications beyond this market, where interconnect flexibility, performance and versatility are key. It features a series of modules that can be configured to meet the precise contact types and numbers, all without special tooling or adhesive - a vast improvement over the conventional solid insert. It also enables the transfer of power, signal and data in a compact form that also delivers significant size and weight reductions. Traditionally, this same level of
versatility would require a dedicated connector to be designed and engineered from scratch. This series can help resolve problems in days rather than weeks. Standardised parts can be stored on the shelves, then shipped or utilised when needed. Assembly and installation are completely tool-free; and the design is so simple that it can be put together by nearly anyone, with no engineering background or supplier support required.
ULTRA-SECURE FOR THE ULTIMATE CONNECTION Configurable modules aren’t the only design innovation this series brings to the table. It also features an innovative locking system comprised of an ultra- secure reverse bayonet coupling mechanism with secondary locking and visual guides. With competitive connectors, improper or incomplete coupling can occur.

RUGGEDLY BUILT FOR THE LONG HAUL Harsh conditions have always been a challenge for rail travel and will always continue to be so. So while its features may be new, the MOVE series still comes with the same superior environmental resilience customary to ITT Veam. One of the key specifications is its
durability. Leading plating solutions such as the company’s Blue Generation plating, a blend of zinc, nickel and chrome III, delivers salt spray resistance of up to 500 hours while offering high levels of conductivity and shielding. It’s also capable of withstanding temperatures ranging from -55ºC to 125ºC.
Due to its rugged design, the
SAFE AND SECURE Typical interconnect technologies in the marketplace today provide limited visual cues that they’re fully secure. In some applications - such as rolling stock where the connector is subject to high mechanical stress, such as vibration - there’s a greater possibility of having the interconnect unmated during operation. This series on the other hand, provides
complete connection certainty. A system of arrows along the side of the connector gides the operator on how to close the device and provides visual confirmation of connection. The mechanism has been designed to be very intuitive. Until the connection is 100% closed, the secondary locking system will not engage. But once it is fully closed, the mechanism is completely secure. In addition, the improved reverse bayonet coupling design with a shorter turn (90° vs. traditional 130°), as well as a smoother ramp angle and a straight ramp start, significantly reduces the effort for mating.

company’s Move series will be one of the first circular connectors to fully meet EN50467 railway standards for connectors. EN50467 is the newest standard in the rail market and is expected to spread from Europe to the US and Asia. So you can be certain the Move series will provide superior performance for years to come.

ENGINEERED FOR THE FUTURE — COMING IN 2019 The company advises its MoveE Modular Series represents the next stage of interconnect innovation. This it claims is in an effort to address multiple needs simultaneously to preemptively solve commons design issues faced by its customers. So while it was designed to perform in
intervehicle, undercar and railway infrastructure applications, that’s only the beginning. What’s in rail transportation today will
be in energy and industrial automation tomorrow. With innovations like this, there’s no telling what will come next. But you can rest assured it will be remarkable.
