Power Integrations’ CAPZero-3 hits the market, a two-terminal, energy-saving X-capacitor discharge IC, compliant to IEC60335 safety regulations and covering capacitor values ranging from 100nF to 6µF. CAPZero-3 ICs block current flow through the X-capacitor discharge resistors when the AC voltage is connected, and automatically discharge X capacitors through those resistors when the AC is disconnected. CAPZero-3 ICs simplify EMI filter designs while permitting the use of larger X capacitors, which in turn enables smaller inductive components to be used with no resulting change in power consumption.


CAPZero-3 ICs can be placed before or after a system’s input fuse. Devices deliver high common-mode surge immunity so that no external ground connection is necessary, featuring a high differential surge withstand due to 1000V internal MOSFETs. Creepage on the package and PCB is maintained at >4 mm. Safety-certified for both CB and Nemko environments, there are no requirements for additional safety tests. Power Integrations

FRAUNHOFER’S ENDOTRACE INTESTINAL CAPSULE


Fraunhofer IZM are enabling enhanced intestinal diagnostics with their latest application: an endoscopic capsule – the Endotrace – for capturing and processing data retrieved from the small intestine of a patient. Fraunhofer’s option aims to tighten and polish one particular part of the process, one that these applications have suffered from before: the accumulation of redundant data, with a third fewer images than previous editions. The project itself operates as so: the built-in controller responds to minute changes in the villi that line the intestinal walls, aiding in the digestion of food. These minor movements trigger the camera, which subsequently records a suitable volume of images, intended to detect acute conditions like gastrointestinal bleeding at a faster rate than previously achievable. That being said, Fraunhofer are honest: while the technology is in the final stages of development, the approval process is still in motion. The promise is there however: a medical application, to improve the longevity of patient care.
