understand the project and respond as it evolves, as these things do – certainly when they’re new.” Cleaner transport is vital if the UK is to remain
committed to Net Zero targets, and GWR’s fast- charging battery trial has shown a significant and positive environmental impact. Headline figures indicate 80% lower carbon emissions than an equivalent diesel train, with the potential for further improvement with carbon-neutral electricity supply into the BESS. There is further work to be undertaken to roll-
out the technology widely – for example, with manufacturers to incorporate fast-charging into train design. But this project has demonstrated the cost-savings that fast-charging offers when compared to full electrification where this is not practical, and the speed at which this technology can be deployed. GWR’s fast-charge battery train trial demonstrates that localised, trackside battery buffering, can successfully bypass rigid Grid capacity limits while remaining significantly cheaper to deploy than traditional infrastructure. Both GWR and Powerstar have proven that these integrated technologies deliver a reliable, cost- effective and clean travel solution, without
compromising the passenger experience. This technology is highly scalable and directly applicable to remote rail networks across the UK. Having the battery operating for a year, with
only minor optimisation during the trial, is hugely significant. Not only does it showcase Nexos Power’s world class engineering, but the reliability provides confidence that this isn’t just another R&D project, but something that can be confidently called a credible solution to the decarbonisation of the railway.
At Nexos Power, we also see the potential
for fast-charging battery technology across both broader and more niche transportation demands, including maritime and logistics.
