RAIL
din-railway power supplies
INDUSTRY FOCUS
Marco van-der Linden, country manager, PULS Power UK, looks into the
importance of specifying DIN-Rail power supplies that offer reliability while meeting the
exacting standards of the railway industry
P
ower supplies are used in the railway industry for a range of applications, from central power, air conditioning and
communication systems, to infotainment, signalling technology and train protection. Reliability is essential here, and power supply failure will not be tolerated, despite their use over an extended temperature range and under extreme mechanical stress. Another challenge faced is that, historically, the input voltages in railways differ from those experienced in industrial applications – removing standard off-the-shelf power supplies from contention. New systems are therefore integrating
rugged decentralised power supplies to reduce cabinet size, minimise power losses, simplify commissioning, relocation and upgrades. The key standards required for power
supplies to be specified in rail equipment are: • EN 50155 Railways Applications – Electronic equipment used on rolling stock
• EN 61373 Rolling Stock Equipment – Shock and vibration tests
• EN 50121-3-2 Electromagnetic Compatibility – Rolling stock – Apparatus
• EN 45545-2 Fire Protection on Railway Vehicles.
a solution for sbb
Developing the experience of the PULS DIN-Rail power supply concept, which has already been proven in tens of thousands of high reliability industrial applications worldwide, a range of fully approved models are now available from PULS for railway systems designers. One such customer is SBB (Swiss Federal Railways). PULS power supplies are being utilised within
approximately 800 electrical cabinets installed along the railroad track all over Switzerland for the control of power lines for the trains. The application required a safety certificate
for the special working conditions of both 50Hz and 16,7Hz power sources (with a standard device) which were provided accordingly. Furthermore, an essential selection criterion for this application was the ability of PULS to support and deliver the chosen product types for many years after design-in. Naturally, cost was important, and the solution provided by PULS was significantly more cost effective than the existing installation. DIN-RAILway power supplies from PULS
represent a new range of railway specific power supplies whose extremely simple DIN-rail mounting simplifies cabinet design and system maintenance, with optional wall and side mounting brackets available for installation flexibility. A complete range of 1- to 3- phase units and DC/DC converters are currently available, approved to fulfil railway standards. The convection cooled DIN-RAILway
power supplies operate down to -40°C, are: fitted with vibration-compensating spring clamp terminals, conformally coated, extremely lightweight, in a compact housing, and provide the highest levels of efficiency. PULS DIN-RAILway customers also receive the benefits of the logistical resources of a large-scale manufacturer. Fully EN 50155 certified, the PULS
DIN-RAILway power supplies are classified according to T3, TX, C2 and S2 for use on rolling stock. They also meet EN 61373 for shock and vibration, EN 50121-3-2 for EMC requirements and EN 45545-2 for fire protection on a railway vehicle according to hazard level HL3. PULS QS Series products have been awarded
full acceptance certification by Network Rail for use with signalling equipment in environments not exceeding 95% relative humidity. The Network Rail product acceptance process is required for products intended for use on or
about rail infrastructure and ensures they are safe, reliable, fit for purpose, compatible and do not export unacceptable risks to the infrastructure. Only accepted products, (except those allowed by NR/L2/RSE/100/05) may be used on rail infrastructure. Models in the range include:
• QS5.241-60 - DC output: 100W, 24V, 4.2-3.6A & 50% power reserves
• CP10.241-60 - DC output: 200W, 24V, 8.3-7.1A • QS10.241-60 - DC output: 200W, 24V, 8.3-7.1A & 50% power reserves
• CPS20.241-60 | DC output: 400W, 24.5V, 16.3A.
going trackside There is also a growing requirement for flexible, modular and decentralised power systems for outdoor mounting on trackside railway equipment. The FIEPOS power supply from PULS Power simplifies installation, enables expansion and reformatting of systems, and simplifies maintenance. Conventional control cabinets can be replaced by smaller versions or removed completely. Rated to IP68 without the need for conformal
coating, FIEPOS is a high efficiency alternative to a conventional power supply requiring installation in a centralised control cabinet and eliminates the need for long, inefficient and costly power cable runs. FIEPOS units can be connected in parallel to increase total output power or form an N+1 redundant system and monitored remotely via IO-Link. Key FIEPOS features include 300 or 500W
output, IP54, IP65 or IP67 protection from dust and water, current limited output channels, and LED user interface for status indication.
