stablished in 1988, ATP Adhesive Systems of Switzerland is a pioneer in the development of solvent free pressure sensitive and


heat activated tapes and films. The company formulates its own adhesives, and production is managed carefully to ensure there is a minimal impact on the environment. Sustainability is, in fact, a key consideration for the company. Typical substrates bonded by ATP’s adhesive


tapes include: Plastics such as ABS, PC, PP, PE, PVC; Metals, painted and powder- coated substrates; Textiles and fabrics. ATP is a long-term partner to the automotive


industry, and with a global supply network into more than 60 countries, is at the forefront of adhesive tape innovation for use in the production of electric vehicle powertrains. In order to meet application demands, the


company can provide either off-the-shelf or bespoke solutions.


ATP SOLUTIONS


Electrical Insulation Films – For cell wrapping, ATP has developed single-sided self-adhesive PET films with thin adhesive coating weights of <20gsm if necessary. These films offer breakdown voltage insulation values of >8kV and a CTI (Comparative Tracking Index) of >600V. These can, however, also be used to electrically insulate other metal parts within the battery module as well. Different product thicknesses and tape colours are available, as well as customer-specific die-cuts.


To achieve electrical insulation,


double coated films can be combined with other materials. Thermal runaway/Barrier


material mounting: For Thermal runaway insulation, lightweight double-sided PET or tissue tapes are available. These can be coated on both sides with permanent adhesive; or one side with permanent adhesive and the other semi-permanent to aid recycling at end of life. Suppliers of thermal runaway systems


rely on mica, glass fibres, ceramic fibres and other materials protecting and bonding to cells, modules, and battery packs. ATP’s tapes for this application are suitable for rough, uneven surfaces. Compression pad bonding: Tapes for


installation of intercellular compression pads can be thin adhesive coatings of <50gsm to suit individual customer requirements. The benefits of using tapes in such applications are guaranteed coating weight, instantaneous bonding, high suitability for automatic assembly and finally – in contrast to liquid adhesives – they require no curing time. Component mounting: For the mounting of


components – such as busbars, sensors, cables and absorber fleeces – within the battery module, self-adhesive tapes can provide support during the application.


Thermal propagation films


Cell-to-cell bonding: ATP offers double-sided


adhesive tapes for the bonding of cell housings within the battery stacking process (cell-to- cell bonding). Different coating weights and carriers are available. Thermal interface materials (TIM): This


product group offers customers the chance to buy converted articles including solvent-free thermally conductive films. These act as thermal interfaces between the top and bottom of the battery cell and cooling plates, with thermal conductivity of up to 3W/mK and high dielectric strength. These TIM pads are silicone-free. Flame retardant tapes: ATP has developed


its own range of halogen-free pressure sensitive tapes, which can be classified as zero burn according to FMVSS302 and VTM-0 according to UL-94: UL 94, the Standard for Safety of Flammability of Plastic Materials for Parts in Devices and Appliances. The standard determines the material’s tendency to either self-extinguish or spread the flame once the specimen has been ignited. FMVSS 302 specifies the burn resistance requirements for materials used in the occupant compartments of motor vehicles (i.e., passenger cars, multipurpose passenger vehicles, trucks, and buses). The company also supplies tapes for

applications including: Foam and nonwoven acoustic insulation; Seals and gaskets; Seat heating and cooling systems; HOD sensors; Decorative trims; Door panels; Headliners; Tyre insulation, etc. There are also low emission (FOG/VOC) adhesive tapes, including a well- established range of low VOC/FOGGING tapes. substances restricted by the GB 27630 regulation (China), the indoor concentration guideline by JAMA (Japanese Automobile Manufacturers Association), or the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW).
