Adhesive developments have resulted in their adoption in more and more applications over the years, with recent examples ranging from lighting products to motorhomes


n recent years, the use of adhesives has grown quickly, thanks to developments that have resulted in such advantages as the ability to bond different materials together, aesthetic benefits over some other fastening methods, and a stronger bond that enables them to be used in even more applications. One example took place at

Mackwell Electronic’s R&D and manufacturing facility,

in volume batches on the shop floor and the company wanted a semi-automatic bond application. So, Techsil took away a housing and lens for assessment and trials at the testing facility at its Bidford HQ. Following the trials, the company chose Momentive’s Snapsil TN3005-C. This is a clear one-part, low volatile, siloxane, thixotropic silicone sealant with a fast tack-free time. TN3005-C offers primerless adhesion to most substrates and cures at room temperature to a 22 Shore A rubber. Bonded units were sent away for rigorous testing and passed with flying colours. where the design of a portfolio of high quality, durable, emergency LED lighting products for a wide range of applications such as entrance lobbies, hospitals, hotels, lifts, offices and staircases, takes place. The company needed to reliably bond

a clear plastic lens into a self-contained emergency light housing. This, however, had to be sealed to IP65 standards for challenging environments. So, needing a

sealant is a high performance material that stood up to rigorous testing and will last for the life of the product. Being a one-part material there is no mixing and no primer needed, making it very easy to use, the company explains. Following this, the Nordson Performus III dispensing system was recommended. This is a compact, operator-controlled benchtop system which is used with an electric foot pedal with the advantage that it could be used with a preparatory feed valve, that Mackwell already had on site, to power the dispenser. With fast, controlled application, the Performus can make dots, beads and fills. The system is now in operation

at Mackwell, which will adapt it further to complete a variety of other


There are now 23 products in Epoxy Technology’s range of ISO-10993 medically approved adhesives. To date, 14 epoxies have undergone ISO-10993-5 Cytotoxicity testing, a

screening test for biocompatibility, and nine additional products have undergone even more screening, passing all ISO-10993 -4, 5, 6, 10, 11 testing. Included in the testing for EPO-TEK MED-301 was an extended implantation test, from the normal two to 12 weeks, which it passed. This specific optically clear epoxy adhesive is one of the most popular and well-proven materials often used for

in-house bonding applications. The dispensing system has increased throughput, improved yields and reduced production costs.

FAST AND DEPENDABLE BONDING Showing the diverse applications in which adhesives are now being used, Chemique Adhesives has worked closely with motorhome manufacturer, Auto-Trail, for more than a decade. In one of its applications the company needed a fast yet dependable method for bonding floors, sides and bulkhead panels. Having looked into the application

demands, Chemique Adhesives suggested Solfre2, a two-component solvent-free adhesive that not only has a short cure time but also eliminates the use of water misting during the bonding process. The adhesive can be used to bond a

wide variety of substrates including metal, plastic, wood and foam. Furthermore, it offers excellent chemical and moisture resistance, and can be applied either manually or automatically by rolling, beading or spraying, complementing a wide variety of production methods and requirements. For this application, Auto-Trail chose

a spray line, but later on a beading one was also added.

The dispensing system uses the adhesive very efficiently, greatly reducing the amount needed per panel, which has led to significant cost reductions. In addition, since the system is working with a solvent-free product, it eliminates the need for extraction fans, saving energy and further reducing costs. “Thanks to the improvements made

possible by Chemique Adhesives, we managed to increase output by 20% last year, which is an extraordinary gain,” commented Carl Bristow, production director at Auto-Trail. “This season we’re looking at producing 24% more vehicles. These productivity gains are a direct result of being able to fit and bond panels in just 12 minutes, compared to the 20 minutes it took before we started using the new products and machines.”
