DRIVES, CONTROLS & MOTORS FEATURE NE TO A CLEAN ENERGY FUTURE

motors alongside 300 industrial drives. Projections show that these ultra-efficient upgrades will reduce overall energy use by 28%, saving an impressive 25 GWh annually – the same energy needed to power more than 6,000 homes across Europe. Moreover, the

upgrade reduces annual CO2 emissions by 12,000 tons and will pay for itself in only three and a half years. With European emissions regulations tightening steadily, the Aurubis plant proves that investing in energy efficiency can drive competitiveness and sustainability efforts simultaneously. In India, steel manufacturer Real Ispat has

decreased energy consumption by over three million kWh per year through modernisation. Using ABB motors and drives and adopting processes like billet hot-charging and recycling dolochar, a coal-based waste product, as a lower-emission fuel source, Real Ispat drastically reduced emissions. Not only have these measures resulted in substantial cost savings, but they’ve also enabled further investments in innovation and growth. Additionally, in a sector responsible

for 7% of global CO2 emissions, Real Ispat demonstrates how Indian SMEs can align business goals with climate action, supporting India’s decarbonisation goals. Significant savings are even possible in municipal infrastructure. Take Germany’s Kulmbach wastewater treatment plant, which upgraded one of its critical inlet lifting pumps using an IE5 SynRM motor paired with an ACQ580 drive. Given that pump stations operate continuously, the expected energy savings of

7–10% is a significant gain, economically, environmentally, and socially. As energy prices rise and municipalities grapple with tighter budgets, these energy efficient technologies directly translate into clear benefits. Consuming less energy at the pump station also means fewer emissions from the local power plant, directly supporting regional and national climate goals. At ABB, we’re also actively improving

sustainability and efficiency across our own operations. Within our IEC Low Voltage Motors division, we’ve already achieved an 84% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions compared to 2019. Our Finland, India, and China facilities proactively implement rooftop solar, heat recovery, LED lighting, and the same premium motors we supply to our customers.

ACT NOW, ACT FAST ABB wants to encourage everyone to view energy efficiency not as a compromise, but as a strategic, immediate action. For businesses just starting their decarbonisation journey, upgrading to the most efficient motor solutions is a proven strategy to reduce energy intensity, safeguard margins, and build a strong foundation for long-term sustainability. Clean energy is the future we seek. But

energy efficiency is what will bring us there faster. Let’s power our planet more responsibly – starting by using less.
