EDITOR’S COMMENT & CONTENTS Mind, Health, Space
W ith a second
lockdown creeping down the country,
this issue looks at how health will be a paramount concern of design and engineering of our buildings in the future.
While the focus of health and wellbeing have come to the fore in day-to-day life, there are more than just short-term fixes to take into account when it comes to buildings. From rethinking public ventilation systems to perfecting the new home office space, how our
health is affected by the buildings around us is a key consideration. This month’s Environmental Awareness looks at ways to create a healthy office environment for the future of communal workplaces to avoid “sick building syndrome”. Factors which may previously have been overlooked, that make up the fabric of a building and defines the spaces they create, such as lighting, materials, plants and sound, among others.
“Buildings which are designed and created with the occupier in mind contribute to an overall
sense of wellbeing and can reduce anxiety about going into work”
However, mental health awareness goes in both directions and Pagabo’s executive chairman, Gerard Toplass, explains how recent statistics regarding depression in the UK’s construction industry have shown a worrying trend that needs addressing seriously, beyond the impact of Covid-19.
