The washrooms in the presgious new internaonal headquarters of exams group, Cambridge Assessment feature the latest infrared water management technology from Cistermiser


employees, formerly based in 11 Cambridge Assessment offices located across the city, have been brought together in the new HQ complex called The Triangle.


The series of linked buildings, sited to the south east of the city centre, have been designed to provide enough office space to eventually accommodate up to 3,000 people by 2025.


There have been 96 Cistermiser Direct Flush ‘Discreet’ infrared urinal flush control valves (DFDs) installed in The Triangle’s 20 washrooms by M & E sub-contractor Allied Mechanical Services, the main contractor being construction company Bouygues. The Direct Flush automatically flushes the individual urinal after use, using as little as 0.5 litres of water each time. This ensures high levels of hygiene from the minimum volume of water.


It operates when a PIR sensor remotely mounted above the urinal detects a user at the bowl. This sends a signal to a solenoid valve, with an integral DC pipe interrupter fitted to comply with water regulations, and flushes two seconds after the occupant leaves.


The flushing control device is fully configurable for flush time and duration, sensing distance and flush arrest, and can be programmed manually or with an ICU remote control.


The unit also has a programmable periodic hygiene flush function for periods of low use and a cleaner’s function to conserve water during routine cleaning and maintenance. The hygiene flush function helps to prevent odours and any build-up of uric acid in the pipework.

Building services design has gone to exceponal lengths to help achieve a high end finish to a major hotel development, over 50m in this parcular case


The length is that of the bulkhead in the reception area for the new 210 room Crowne Plaza and 116-room Staybridge Suite which are in one, 18 storey building for in the heart of Manchester, by Bruntwood. To help property developer Bruntwood realise the interior design objectives of its client, InterContinental Hotels Group, that of a premium finish, all the public and administrative areas feature ventilation grilles from Gilberts Blackpool, installed by A&B Engineering (mechanical services). ‘Pride of place’ has gone to Gilberts’ LG linear bar grille, an LG/15/3 extends more than 51m continuously along the main


reception area. It is complemented across the different public and administrative spaces by Gilberts’ DG louvred diffusers, MBD multiblade diffusers, GSLS linear slot diffusers, HSLS high capacity slot diffusers, and GX and GH deflector grilles. “The reception grille was a challenge,” explains A&B design engineer Andy Poole. “It was an interior design requirement that the bulkhead featured a continuous linear grille. All parties involved had to work closely together to ensure it was as ‘true’ as possible, as any deviation would be emphasised by such a long continuous grille.


“Beyond the main reception, we had to devise a strategy whereby the mechanical ventilation would deliver comfort cooling with appropriate levels of fresh air, and exhaust used air from, conference facilities, the gym, restaurant, bars, lounges, management offices and staff rooms across 18 floors. It had to marry air handling units mounted on the roof and plantrooms in the lower levels. Gilberts’ breadth of product and in-house design and manufacturing capabilities meant that, from one source, we could


confidently supply the diversity of grilles and diffusers needed.”

Hounsfield Boilers' external Tuscan oil fired boiler has been installed on a houseboat and modified to run on diesel


The Sir Max Atkin was a lifeboat that had saved over 150 lives, but the boat was about to change beyond all recognition when Guy Gregson purchased it for his new home. Guy turned to Hollie Stallworthy of Hollies Heating. Guy explains: “The boat has two-and-a-half tonnes of red diesel for power, so I needed a system that could run from it. Speaking with Hollie it was clear that there was not an obvious company that could help me.” Hollie contacted all of the big-name boiler companies, but none would offer any guarantees for their boilers to run on red diesel. Hollie then asked for help on a heating social media forum, and it was here that Hounsfield Boilers came recommended. Hollie says: “I hadn't come across Hounsfield Boilers before, so I gave them a call. I found them very helpful.” She continues: “The company's MD, Andrew Hounsfield, answered all of the questions I had, so I felt confident


and ordered one. The commissioning of the boiler did not take long as everything had been set up perfectly when the boiler was dispatched from the factory.”


For Andrew Hounsfield the modifications that needed to be made to the boiler were slight: “We are a small company and can easily adapt our production line to help customers use our boilers in bespoke applications, and we were happy to help Hollie and Guy.”


For Guy the Hounsfield Boiler was perfect: “It's simple to use and I can forget that it is running, it's so quiet and reliable and very economical.” Hollie adds: “The boiler was priced very competitively and the no quibble guarantee was wonderful. It's nice, as an engineer, to deal with something so simple and to have a happy customer.”

Kingspan’s pipe and ductwork products have been installed on the Grade II listed Hanover at NOMA in Manchester to provide spacesaving insulaon which enhances the performance of its building services


Hanover comprises a former Edwardian drapery warehouse and office block, linked by an atrium. The development team at NOMA wanted to ensure the regeneration of the eight-storey structure preserved its heritage character, whilst creating efficient Grade A office space to complement its retail and leisure facilities.


M&E consultants, Walsh Integrated Building Services, worked with Russells Construction to develop a specification which delivered modern levels of performance within the restraints of the existing building’s design. To help deliver this, Cilex Insulations Ltd installed 7,000lm of Kingspan Kooltherm Pipe


Insulation and 500m2 of Kingspan Kooltherm Duct Insulation on the internal


ductwork of the building, including the plant rooms and within the service void of a Kingspan Access Floors raised access flooring. There was also 500m2


of


Kingspan Therma Duct Insulation used for the external ductwork on the roof. Kingspan Kooltherm Pipe Insulation can achieve industry leading aged thermal conductivities as low as 0.025W/m.K (at +10°C mean). As a result of its excellent thermal performance, a reduced thickness of insulation can be used which allowed the pipework to be effectively insulated within the tight service spaces.


Kingspan Kooltherm Duct Insulation is a rigid phenolic insulation and has been CE Marked to verify its compliance with the harmonised European Standard (hEN). The duct insulation has been installed on the internal ductwork of Hanover as it can achieve conductivities as low as 0.022W/m.K (at +10°C mean), helping to keep ductwork dimensions to a minimum without compromising energy performance.


On the external ductwork fabricated for the roof, Kingspan Therma Duct Insulation was fitted as its high-performance core can achieve a conductivity as low as 0.023W/m.K (at +10°C mean).
