ith the 18th Edition of the IET Wiring

Regulations due to come into force on 1 July, new research has revealed that businesses operating in the commercial and

industrial sectors remain positive about the reform and the impact it may bring.

According to a new poll conducted amongst Bureau Veritas UK customers, 93% of those working in the industry welcome the legislative change. Of the key reasons cited, half say it will help to raise standards, almost a quarter claim a duty to embrace new safety regulation and a fifth say safety is their number one priority.

Notably, all respondents felt that the highly debated addition of Part 8,

constituting the first time the regulations have

introduced any guidance in relation to energy efficiency, is a positive step forward.

Of these, over half said it will support best practice in energy-efficient installation and just under a third feel the new standard is key to progressing the green agenda.

Interestingly, however, almost two thirds admitted that they are still not fully prepared for the changes the 18th Edition may bring, despite full competency coming into effect in less than a year.

This isn’t helped by an apparent lack of available support, with nearly four in ten stating they don’t feel it has been clearly communicated to the industry and a further 15% either doing their own research or relying on their compliance partner. Adding to the positive sentiment, almost two thirds

thought that the UK Wiring Regulations should still be aligned with the requirements of the European Standards (CENELEC), regardless of the outcome of Brexit. Two in five said it’s important to achieving full globalisation and 28% said it will result in more holistic, safer standards. Mahendra Mistry, Technical Manager for electrical systems at Bureau Veritas, said: “It’s fantastic to see such an incredibly positive response to the upcoming 18th Edition. Of course, as with any new regulation, it may take time to adjust to the changes and a bedding in period – but it’s an investment worth making, and one which will help to propel electrical standards into a new era where the protection of people becomes the paramount priority.”



Three ways to improve pump and fan eciency

nstalling a variable speed drive (VSD) to replace direct-on-line (DOL) motor control can reduce energy consumption of pumps and fans by up to 60 percent. However, efficiency can often be increased even further by utilising existing features within the drive.

Therefore, when next considering how to improve the efficiency of existing systems, ask yourself these three questions:

Does my VSD have energy optimisation?

Energy optimisation (also known as flux optimisation) helps ensure that motors are controlled using the least amount of energy. With this feature, the VSD automatically detects changes in the load and then controls the motor to its lowest flux (magnetic field) levels, thus saving energy constantly across the lifetime of an application. With energy optimisation, the magnitude of the motor’s magnetic field is controlled according to the actual load and across the speed range to minimise energy being used at all points.

The greatest energy savings are achieved at partial loads. For example, with 25 percent load there is up to 10 percent total energy efficiency improvement. At 50 percent load there can be two percent total efficiency improvement. This directly impacts on operating costs. This feature also significantly reduces the motor noise compared to that generated by the switching frequency of a traditional drive. Noise is an indication of inefficiency and is another source of losses.

Some VSDs feature a statistical tool that analyses and interprets drive behaviour including process energy efficiency and operation.

The analyser provides information on system maintenance needs and can be used to illustrate and control the system’s energy efficiency. It allows users to identify periods of unexpectedly high (or low) load and can point towards system optimisation improvements.

Does my VSD have on-board energy counters? While on-board energy counters do not increase energy efficiency, they allow the end-user easy monitoring of consumed energy and realised energy savings. This is crucial for organisations wishing to prove the validity of investing in VSD technology.

The counters calculate the energy savings achieved using VSDs, compared to equivalent DOL motor control methods. The savings are shown in kWh, MWh, CO2 emissions and money saved.

On-board counters can also assist with electricity billing in accordance with Part L2 Building Regulations. This allows verification of energy savings before making investments in capital equipment.

aing O’Rourke recently welcomed HRH The Duke of York to its Explore Industrial Park facility in Steetley, Worksop, to showcase best practice in modern methods of construction and highlight opportunities for more diverse entry to our industry.

HRH, Patron of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), visited the Laing O’Rourke facility in Worksop, and spoke to the team about the development and integration of its Design for Manufacture and Assembly approach.

As part of the visit, The Duke of York also learned about Laing O’Rourke’s vision for precision-engineered offsite homebuilding, and the mock-up of a Crossrail Station showing how construction components were being used in the field. HRH was briefed on how the UK construction industry is addressing some of the skills and innovation challenges.
