Nextgeneraon lighng equipment and boiler controls have been installed at the Edinburgh Primary School and Adult Learning Centre operated by Waltham Forest Council.

INSTALLATION NEWS SPONSORED BY Energys delivers efficiency improvements for educational facilities

The energy-saving potential of a large primary school and adult learning centre in Waltham Forest has been transformed with the latest Energys lighting and boiler control technologies. The new solutions – financed via Salix through client and site owner/operator Waltham Forest Council – have also remedied long-running sensor inadequacies and failure problems associated with previous systems.

The starting point was Energys’ approach to the council’s energy team with information about the long-term cost savings that could be obtained with its latest lighting and boiler control ranges, as well as the relatively short payback period that could be achieved.

Through conversations with Energys, which produced detailed forecasts and specification sheets for projected site-wide installations – the council’s energy manager, Andras Kis was assured that the new solutions would make an enduring difference to energy consumption.

A two-phase programme of work took place during school breaks in early 2018, ensuring minimum disruption.

At both sites the final specification drew on a cross-section of Energys solutions, with emphasis on high-efficiency LED products. LED light fittings were installed widely, along with motion/occupancy sensors to make sure that lighting was only used when and where it was required.

The project was extensive and covered all areas in the school and now both sites can look forward to payback periods that are expected to be in the region of five years, as well as significant annual savings of approximately £12,000.

The new lighting also comes equipped with multi- year warranties, allowing the school and Adult Learning Centre to lower their forecasts for lamp replacements and associated labour.

Gilberts is on target at cadets’ shooting ranges

Leading British air movement specialist Gilberts (Blackpool) delivered the challenge in the construction of a new accredited training school for a branch of the UK security sector.

Alongside the four storey main ‘school’ building are two firing training arenas, where both live and blank ammunition will be fired.

uGilberts’ air velocity flow simulaon for the shoong range.

Both ranges feature banks of Gilberts’ ventilation grille and plenum assemblies, up to 3.8m high, integrated into the ballistic steel walls. A total of 38 assemblies, with Gilberts’ G grille at the core, ensure adequate, laminar supply of fresh air into the zones without affecting the bullet trajectory. Gilberts’ G Series of aluminium grilles provide single or double deflection for supply and extract in ceilings or walls. Each aerofoil blade is individually adjustable, enabling achievement of the fine tolerances required for the ranges. In-house facilities including computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software, and a bespoke testing laboratory meant Gilberts was able to validate

concept and performance before installation and operation.

“We had to prove our design moved all the carbon dioxide and lead to the exhaust end of the range and kept airflow consistent from the firing end to the targets,” explained Gilberts’ Technical Director Roy Jones. “In testing, we achieved face velocity as low as 0.1- 0.3m/s across the whole range.”

This shooting range is the latest of several similar projects that Gilberts has delivered, on ranges varying from 20m to 100m deep, and represents another example of Gilberts’ expertise in creating a perfect air movement environment; it has solved further complex challenges as diverse as mirroring tropical rain forest air movement for a zoological park, to maintaining a conditioned environment in a 9m high entrance hall where the main façade was fully glazed.

REHAU’s PROFILA data trunking has been specified for a highquality student accommodaon development in Portswood, Southampton.

REHAU provides top grade data cabling solution for students

Select Property Group’s Vita Student residence will provide accommodation for University of Southampton and Solent University Southampton students. The 435-bed residence will also include a communal area, social hub, movie room, gym, private dining and study areas. Andy Hindley, Project Manager at contractor, J&B Hopkins, said: “The data trunking specified by Select was very minimal; in each room they wanted a 1m section of trunking which would house the HDMI for the television, a data point, a USB charging point and a double socket. This would be mounted on the wall underneath the desk, around 400mm from the floor. “We looked at the REHAU PROFILA Data range and it was perfect for what we were doing. It is a good quality product, which would fit in with the high-end spec of the development, but it was also competitively priced.”

PROFILA data trunking has been designed to meet the requirements of the latest power

and data cables. With a depth of 65mm, it is the deepest trunking in its class, able to handle modern data cabling and power cables with ease.

Andy said: “Installation of the PROFILA was very quick and simple. It comes with holes pre- punched into the base, which saves time on install, plus it has an open design so once its on the wall, we can just run the cables in and fit on the front cover. REHAU were able to supply the PROFILA in 1m long sections for us, so there was no cutting required.”

PROFILA is a robust, hardwearing trunking with discreet rivet fixings to ensure the PVC-U trunking stays securely in place.

Andy concluded: “We are very confident this product will be a fit and forget for us, and we won’t be getting call backs about it.”

The brief was to provide a high quality, energy efficient lighting solution to replace old T8 fittings in the refurbished areas, whilst providing a good overall uniform lighting scheme that would extend into the new build section.

uZumtobel’s Slotlight suspended fings have been used in the library and recepon to deliver uniform overhead light.

The scheme includes refurbishment of the organisation’s existing building and the construction of a new 5,400sq ft extension, with hexagonal glazed cladding referencing the molecular structure of ice. The refurbishment created a lecture theatre, two seminar rooms and four meeting rooms along with a new library and reception area. The centre will also offer a 32-desk, open plan collaboration area. Zumtobel’s slimline LINCOR has been installed in the new office space to provide indirect/direct light and excellent luminaire efficiency, in addition to Thorn’s Omega Pro luminaires which are ideal for lay-in installations into 15mm or 24mm exposed T grid ceilings.

utilised in the library and reception to deliver uniform overhead light, along with acdc’s Blade Pro in the reception. Blade Pro is a compact, low glare linear LED wallwash fitting that creates a welcoming ambience. Zumtobel’s Slotlight Panos downlighters in combination with acdc’s powerful linear luminaire Blade illuminate the conference rooms, giving an even wash of vertical light. Thorn’s versatile Chalice downlighters are installed in the corridors to dramatically reduce maintenance demands and costs, with a life of up to 50,000 hours, alongside Thorn’s Omega LED luminaires.

The refurbished sections incorporate Thorn’s IQ Wave recessed LED fitting that focuses on intelligent controls, optics and design, along with Thorn’s Mirel LEDs louvered fittings. The overall lighting scheme has seamlessly combined the refurbished and new build sections.
