Energy bills can be one of the highest costs to a business, and British businesses have long complained that they face some of the highest electricity costs in Europe. Fortunately, there are utilities consultants who can help businesses make smarter decisions on their utility bills – providing support, removing stress and, most importantly, lowering costs.

Predicng Triads

Did you know that every year National Grid announces the three highest peaks of electricity demand for the previous winter? The highest half-hour periods of demand, known as ‘Triads’, form the basis of National Grid’s electricity transmission charges. For businesses with half- hourly metered sites, identifying the annual Triad period is crucial, as they can lower the cost of their electricity bills by reducing usage over those peak periods.

ENERGY MANAGEMENT BSEE

Cool down your energy bills during Triad season What is a Triad?

A Triad is one of the three highest peaks of electricity demand between November and February each year. These half-hourly periods normally occur between 4pm and 6pm on weekdays and must be at least ten days apart. As such, consecutive days of high demand do not yield multiple Triads. Specific factors that influence Triad periods include air temperature, wind speed and an overlap of business and domestic demand.

How do I predict a Triad?

The prediction of Triads is not straightforward and isn’t something that businesses can do alone.

The 2017/18 Triad season was particularly difficult even for experts within Utilitywise. We saw a few potential firsts, which made forecasting challenging and pointed towards an evolution in electricity demand.

This year’s data indicated an increase in energy efficiency and demand management, creating uncertainty around what level the system would peak. This is further intensified when the very act of reacting to a possible Triad – by reducing demand – could paradoxically mean the Triad does not occur.

Even though the process was challenging, Utilitywise correctly predicted the three Triads between November and February, when demand was at its highest.

Ulitywise’s predicon

We identified the three specific half- hourly periods that occurred on 11th December 2017, 5th February 2018, and 26th February 2018. Thanks to our ‘Triad Alert Service’, our customers were alerted at least 24 hours ahead of time, thus reducing numerous electricity transmission charges for businesses across the UK, saving tens of thousands of pounds. Utilitywise provides a daily Triad Alert Service throughout the winter season, each year offering customers advice on whether or not

to take action to avoid high Triad charges. When a ‘Red Alert’ is issued, the advice is for customers to take action immediately to shift or reduce their energy usage. As we approach winter, our message is clear: you are not alone. There are numerous utilities consultancies across the UK who can secure the right electricity, gas or water contract, giving you the best chance to reduce costs. Over winter, a Triad Alert Service will also give you warning of when to try and reduce energy usage.
