unprecedented activity to highlight the problems with single use plastic. Belgian city Bruges, for example, recently constructed a giant whale in the heart of its canal network to demonstrate the impact that waste plastic is having on marine wildlife.
Such has been the reach of these kinds of initiatives that students at a school in Brighton implored staff to help remove plastic bottles from all buildings – with the headmaster making headlines across the UK when he announced that he would punish children who used them in the same way that he disciplined those who smoked cigarettes.
Challenges and opportunies
For hotels and leisure facilities, the drive away from single-use plastic bottles creates both a challenge and an opportunity. Whereas once customers were more than happy to take bottled water from a vending machine or fridge, they are often now looking for a solution which allows them to refill their own reusable bottles on site.
Meeting this demand can help to present the facility as an
environmentally-friendly establishment and is a natural progression from other schemes such as removing plastic straws, which many hotels are adopting in a bid to substantially cut down on their plastic waste.
Once a facility has decided to prioritise refillable drinking water provision, the appropriate solution must be selected.
For many facilities managers, the most obvious product has long been the bottled water cooler. However, more recently this has begun to fall out of favour – not least because the bottles used to store the water are not strictly

PROVIDING DRINKING WATER And keeping a clear conscience
ecent months have seen the discussions around the effects of single-use plastic increase in scope – making all of us more aware of the impact that
environmentally friendly, but also because certain reports have alleged that the bottles can pose a risk to health, too.
Often, the most economical solution is to provide plumbed-in drinking water products. These units offer many advantages, such as the ability to be thermostatically controlled and quickly and simply maintained. They also offer a high-level of hygiene and are easy and safe to use, without the need for wasteful plastic bottles.
Drawing their water directly from the mains, plumbed-in units are hassle free and financially efficient – and they’re easy to install, which helps to prevent initial disruption in the workplace. Look for options which are supplied with a filter and which can be installed in addition to existing taps. Given that these options are plumbed into the mains water supply, they offer an endless source of hydration and refreshment.
For facilities where both hot and chilled water are required from the same unit, Heatrae Sadia’s Aquatap can be the ideal solution. It can deliver both ambient and chilled water, with options including boiling only, boiling/chilled and boiling/ambient. Aquatap is also cool to the touch and features a built-in safety button which prevents boiling water being released by accident.
Ideal soluon
This makes it an ideal catch-all solution for everything from offices to commercial kitchens – especially when you consider the fact that it is incredibly reliable, offering the capacity for up to 180 cups (or 30 litres) of chilled water per hour.
Heatrae Sadia offers the SuperChill chilled water unit, which is available in three different models for varying applications. It offers an optional filter accessory and, supplied with its own spout, can be installed in addition to existing taps. Because it is plumbed into the mains water supply, it offers a plentiful source of hydration and refreshment, with a chilled water capacity of up to 30 litres per hour. News stories have created a groundswell of public opinion against single use plastics and placed a certain pressure on hotels and leisure facilities to reduce its usage on their premises. By exploring plumbed in drinking water units which give a constant supply of chilled water to use for refillable bottles, they can make the most of this changing opinion, and ensure they are equipped to succeed in an increasingly environmentally- conscious world.
