Test & measurement

be halted and the findings reported to the Permit Office to request an isolation check. Before resuming work, the voltage indicator needs to be re-proved on a calibrated proving unit. This process is critical for determining whether equipment is safe to work on, rather than relying on an isolation having been applied. An isolation point, switch or permit alone does not provide sufficient assurance that the conductors at the point of work are de-energised. The test needs to be carried out where the work is planned to take place, using appropriate, suitably rated equipment, with the instrumentation itself checked for compatibility before and after use. If testing is not carried out regularly and accurately, this can lead to significant delays and risk stalling progress. This exemplifies how health and safety protocols in testing are essential to overall project success.

Once systems are operational, test equipment helps engineers detect and resolve issues before they affect on-site safety, equipment performance or the wider engineering process. This proactive approach supports effective system management, ensures safety and extends product lifespan.

CREATING A SAFE INDUSTRY Looking to the future, we expect to see huge shifts in the apparatus used to test and measure in engineering environments. We are already utilising AI in some safety measures, but as the industry adapts to new energy projects while tackling a shortage of engineers, AI will be an essential tool to ensure safety on site by preventing accidents and enhancing situational awareness. This includes new modes of testing and measurement, but it is worth noting that while AI can speed up certain processes, it is not a replacement for skilled engineers. Indeed, as we look ahead, it

is likely that more and more engineers will see their roles adapt to oversee the work of AI tools and manually cross-check new processes. At present, thermal imaging cameras, which detect infrared radiation in engineering equipment, allow on-site teams to identify heat patterns in machinery and equipment. This is typically overseen manually. However, AI tools could be used in future to analyse and identify abnormal heat patterns that could point to a hazardous equipment fault.

Instead of waiting for a component or machine to fail, teams can identify faults and instrument deterioration in time to intervene before the issue becomes a serious threat to on-site safety. By identifying issues before they escalate, these tools help engineers reduce costly downtime, avoid safety risks, ensure compliance and maintain operational continuity across projects.

ADVANCED MEASUREMENT Historically, traditional quality control methods in engineering and manufacturing relied on manual inspections and sampling techniques, which had the disadvantage of being susceptible to human error.

Advanced measurement systems are critical tools for ensuring precision and accuracy in manufacturing. These systems are designed to

record much-needed comprehensive data about products in real time, enabling manufacturers to track quality throughout the production process. Emerging technologies like real-time AI monitoring and predictive analytics will enable proactive risk management. These advancements shift safety from a reactive practice to one that prevents hazards before they arise. Salko UK is committed to creating safe workplaces, where automation, data-driven insights and smarter engineering design inform a safer industry. Additionally, advanced measurements play a critical role in ensuring that products comply with relevant safety standards for workers by identifying potential mechanical or electrical hazards before they escalate. The integration of advanced digital testing tools and real- time monitoring technologies enables industry professionals to predict and address faults more proactively than ever.
