Data acquisition ’’

Smart factories are only getting smarter as more devices become integrated into the production line. Among the most popular are Internet of Things (IoT) devices, which are expected to increase from 17.7 billion in 2020 to 36.8 billion in 2025. Benefits such as remote asset monitoring, reduced down-time, and predictive maintenance are driving growth.

THE MULTICLOUD IMPERATIVE Moving data workloads comes at a cost. For many manufacturers using multiple clouds, it is fast becoming prohibitive. Soon, it will be simply unaffordable to transfer data from their factory floor devices to the multiple clouds they use – especially when there are more urgent costs in today’s tough economic environment. This limits the ability for manufacturers to gain insights from their own data, leaving many with an asset they cannot use. It is a common problem across industries. Seagate’s recently commissioned report found 69 per cent of organisations have been forced to delete unstructured data that could have been used to create business value.

The solution to this challenge is to introduce a defined data management strategy, which will look different for each manufacturing business, depending on its needs. For some, it could be creating a Financial Operations and Cloud Operations unit within their business that encourages collaboration between technology, operations and finance teams. For others, it could mean a new governance plan that manages their multiple vendors and cloud service providers and helps keep costs under control. Other options also include using third-party cloud cost tools to help measure every deployment decision, as well as increasing automation to reduce the burdens on personnel.

Businesses that devise an effective multicloud strategy are over five times more likely to beat revenue goals by 10 per cent and over six times more likely to go to market months or even quarters ahead of their competition.

MATURE MULTICLOUD EXECUTION To increase production, delivery speeds and efficiency, manufacturers must ensure they fully exploit data across their organisation. This means breaking down silos between different areas of the business for maximum impact. Prioritising cloud and data management strategies will enhance operations, drive innovation, and help maintain a competitive advantage. Faced with the largest economic crisis in recent history, the fourth industrial revolution has a key role to play in accelerating today’s recovery and tomorrow’s growth.
