Correvit sensors from Kistler are used for slip-free acquisition of vehicle dynamics measurands such as displacement and speed, both in vehicle tests and on the racetrack.

Successful teamwork: the members of mu-zero HYPERLOOP at the end of the season, gathered around their prize-winning "Aurora" hyperloop pod (Hendrik Behling, second from right; Robin Köhnlein, front row, first from left).

“There are a number of reasons why the Kistler sensor is highly relevant for us,” says Hendrik Behling, business lead at mu-zero HYPERLOOP. “It supplies the measurands speed, displacement and acceleration directly to the control system. That’s essential in braking, for example, so that the pod comes to a standstill promptly on the relatively short route. The second measurement axis of the Kistler sensor, in the Y direction, will allow us to control the pod’s lateral movement so it doesn’t tip us off the rail.” As a result, mu-zero HYPERLOOP plans to dispense with redundant displacement measurement systems such as IMUs and the encoder-based system in the future and use just the optical sensor from Kistler. “In the third year, we’ll be aiming to maintain our place in the top group, and we want to continue expanding the scalability of our approach. And for the first time, we also want to build our own route system,” says Köhnlein, setting the direction. The next European Hyperloop Week will take place in Scotland in the Summer of 2023.

OPTIMUM ROAD HOLDING THANKS TO CORREVIT

Just as it is for the student team, the Correvit is of great use to vehicle developers in a wide variety of applications because it measures physical variables that are relevant for the safe and agile design of vehicles of all types. The two-axis sensor acquires the signal optically and processes it further optoelectronically. The resulting measured variables are displacement and speed in the longitudinal and transverse directions as well as the angle. Even under the most difficult conditions, such as unfavorable road surfaces, the Correvit sensors deliver highly accurate results. In addition, they are highly resistant to shock and vibration. Beyond future mobility, they are primarily used in on-road vehicle dynamics tests, i.e. on steered vehicles ranging from passenger cars to off-road vehicles to the largest dump trucks and Formula 1.
