Welcome to the June issue of Instrumentation Monthly.

The deadline for the 2026 Instrumentation & Electronics Awards has been extended

until the end of July, giving businesses more time to enter this year’s expanded programme. With new categories recognising Industrial AI, passive and electromechanical components, and academic support and training, there has never been a better time to put your achievements in the spotlight. - Victoria White, Editor TRUSTED DISTRIBUTOR STATUS FOR ANGLIA A A

BB has successfully upgraded critical power infrastructure at the Smithsonian Institution’s iconic Arts and Industries

Building., as it prepares to welcome visitors during the nation’s 250th anni- versary celebrations. The electrical modernisation is part of a larger revitali- sation effort to enhance safety, reliability and preservation for both staff and visi- tors during this historic milestone.

nglia Components has achieved ‘Trusted Distributor’ status with JDI Europe, the manufacturer of LCD and TFT displays for a wide range of global markets including automotive, industrial, consumer and medical. This means Anglia is now trusted by JDI to independently carry out compliance checks and approve defencerelated projects, dramatically reducing compliance lead times and enabling faster customer certification. “Defence customers can now access JDI’s Rugged Plus displays, engineered for extreme reli- ability, wide operating temperatures, low power consumption and longterm availability, quickly and with confidence through Anglia”, said John Bowman, Anglia Components’ marketing director. Michael Buntscheck, general manager sales at JDI Europe added: “JDI has a long-standing relationship with Anglia going back to before the merger of the small and medium size LCD panel businesses of

Hitachi, Sony and Toshiba. We greatly value the high levels of technical and commercial support that Anglia offers customers, and they are more than competent to offer this extended service for customers in the defence sector.”

JDI’s product range features displays with high resolution, high picture quality, wide viewing angle, high contrast, thin and lightweight structure, and low power consumption. The company’s Rugged Plus series displays deliver IPS (in-plane switching) technology with superior optical performance and proven longterm reliability. Each product undergoes rigorous testing to ensure dependable operation over extended product lifecycles in hostile environments. Special attention is given to providing long-horizon support ensuring a product lifetime exceeding five years, that includes an extended development period, and long-term maintenance requirements.

ABB MODERNISES SMITHSONIAN’S ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS AS THE UNITED STATES MARKS 250 YEARS

The Smithsonian’s second-oldest building, the Arts and Industries building, has held national significance since opening in 1881 and remains a symbol of innovation, discovery and public access to knowledge. The historic building’s electrical systems have been upgraded to support day-to-day operations as part of the larger ‘Historic Core’ renovation project. This effort reflects the Smithsonian’s commitment to safe- guarding its heritage while preparing the building for future use. For a brief but important four-month period, the building will reopen as a

central gathering point for the 250th anniversary celebrations, welcoming visitors to the nation’s capital. Against this backdrop, ensuring the reliability of critical electrical infrastruc- ture is essential. Modernisation was a priority, not only to enable the building’s reopening for this historic occasion, but also to strengthen its ability to operate safely, reliably and sustainably. To meet these requirements, ABB retrofitted the site’s switchgear with custom-engineered circuit breakers. Manufactured at ABB’s US Electri- fication Service factory in Florence, South Carolina, the breakers were designed with integral fusing to meet the site’s specific fault current protec- tion needs, and to support increased operational demand.

While largely unseen, the building’s electrical infrastructure plays a critical role that extends beyond powering lighting and exhibits. It also supports the south side of the National Mall and neigh- boring Smithsonian facilities, contributing to the operations of the wider campus. With visitor numbers set to surge for the upcoming celebrations, ensuring reliable power is essential not only to the visitor experience, but also the safe and contin- uous operation of the site.

ABB’s Electrification Service team began with detailed maintenance across existing equipment, including

three switchgear line-ups and six network protectors. Every component was assessed, tested and prepared to ensure a strong foundation ahead of the upgrade.

The project then progressed to modernisation, integrating circuit breakers with enhanced system protec- tion designed to respond faster to faults. Additionally, new safety features and labeling were updated to help reduce risk for personnel working on or near energised equipment, strengthening overall operational safety.

The upgrade also allows the Smith- sonian to manage its infrastructure using integrated monitoring and data capabilities that enable continuous visibility into system performance, allowing potential issues to be identi- fied and addressed proactively. Projects like this rarely take centre stage, and while visitors will not see the switchgear, circuit breakers or the detailed engineering studies behind

them, they will experience a facility with reliable power. This level of reliability helps the Smithsonian team focus on what matters most – delivering mean- ingful and engaging experiences for the public during this significant milestone. “It’s been a complex project involving some agile thinking and great collab- oration between our team and that of the Smithsonian. We were delighted to have a role in strengthening the critical infrastructure of one of the country’s most prestigious institutions, and at such a significant time. It’s been an honor to support the Smithsonian’s priorities of safe and reliable operations both now and into the future,” said Pedro Robredo, senior vice president of Electrification Service, Americas Region, ABB.
