Flow, level & control
The new fluid differed significantly from the clear and colourless traditional formulations. A green opaque liquid with higher viscosity – physical characteristics that altered the fluid’s behaviour within the system – particularly affected sensing and flow measurement performance. Working closely with Titan Enterprises, it was identified that the biodegradable fluid’s optical properties caused increased light attenuation within the sensing path, making the existing optical flow sensors unsuitable for the new system and coloured fluid.
Titan recommended implementing its OG2 oval gear sensing technology, which is inherently better suited to higher viscosity fluids and maintains measurement accuracy regardless of fluid optical clarity. This approach not only resolved the light attenuation issue, but also delivered stable, repeatable flow measurement under the more demanding rheological conditions of the new environmentally compliant fluid. As a result, Grinsty Rail was able to upgrade its fluid chemistry without compromising system performance.
PARTNERSHIP IN AN ADVANCING TECHNOLOGICAL LANDSCAPE As technology continues to evolve, organisations face increasing pressure to
innovate – frequent product updates are often seen as progress. However, in long- life industries such as rail, innovation must be balanced with stability to minimise risk, cost and complexity. This approach allows Grinsty Rail to adopt new capabilities without compromising the integrity of existing systems.
Jeremy Thorne, Titan’s operations manager, explains: “Rather than driving unnecessary product changes, we prioritise reliability, durability and precision performance with consistent product design and availability, particularly for customers whose systems have a long operational life.” Grinsty Rail’s de-icing systems are built to

last - and are now undergoing a refurbishment programme to extend their operational life even further. In this context, continuity of supply is essential and Titan’s FT2 and OG flowmeters continue to integrate seamlessly, bridging legacy infrastructure with current requirements. This capability accelerates refurbishment timelines and minimises operational disruption, ensuring that systems can be modernised efficiently while maintaining proven performance.
RESULTS THAT LAST
In an industry defined by long asset lifecycles and increasing technological complexity, through its collaboration with Titan Enterprises, Grinsty Rail has achieved:
Reliable performance in demanding environments
Long-term system stability across multiple vehicle platforms
Reduced total cost of ownership Streamlined refurbishment programmes A trusted, enduring supplier relationship
This is a practical example of how the right partnership supports both innovation and stability. The success of the Titan–Grinsty relationship is rooted in close engineering alignment. Over years of collaboration, both organisations have developed a deep understanding of each other’s systems, requirements, and constraints.
