Talent in Logistics returns bigger and better for 2018

Bookings are now open for the Talent in Logistics conference and awards event, dedicated to the training, learning and development professionals in the logistics, transport and warehousing industries. Returning on 21 June 2018

at the Telford International Centre in the West Midlands,

the event includes a daytime conference, offering visitors the chance to attend seminars, panel discussions and debates exploring the key issues facing training, learning and development managers, as well as materials handling equipment and LGV driving instructors. The live grand finals of the 2018 Forklift Operator of the Year and Forklift Instructor of the Year competitions will also take place on the day. Confirmed conference sessions include practical tips on ensuring

compliance, what to expect following a workplace transport accident and how to handle HSE investigations. There will be a seminar from DVSA (Driver & Vehicle Standards Agency) exploring the future of vocational driver training, and as well as this, the Information Zone will give visitors the chance to meet with experts and suppliers from the transport and logistics industry. This will help businesses to ensure they are procuring and delivering the right training for their staff. The Talent in Logistics Awards recognise and reward the people that

are essential to the success of the logistics sector in the UK and Ireland. Entering the awards online is free of charge. Award nominations open on 3 January 2018. To find out more, visit www.talentinlogistics.co.uk

A MILLION MORE SKILLED ENGINEERS NEEDED ANNUALLY IN THE UK

More than a quarter of a million skilled engineers are needed each year to meet the demand from engineering and manufacturing companies, says EEF, the manufacturers’ organisation. Following Tomorrow’s Engineers

Week, which took place this month, some key facts were released to explain why the industry must encourage more young people into a career in engineering: • Job opportunities: Engineering

UK estimates that 265,000 skilled entrants are required annually to meet demand for engineering companies through to 2024; • 66 per cent of manufacturers

committed to recruiting an engineering graduate in 2016 and the same amount committed to recruiting an engineering apprentice last year as well; • 72 per cent of manufacturers

say raising awareness of apprenticeships will encourage more young people into manufacturing;

EDUCATION & DEVELOPMENT ZONE LAUNCHES FOR MACH 2018

The next MACH 2018 event will play host to an Education & Development (E&D) Zone specifically designed for students aged 11-19. The E&D Zone will bring together some the leading advanced engineering companies and educational institutions from across the UK, with the aim to shine a light on the vocational education and training that is imperative to closing the skills gap around the world. The E&D Zone is once again

supported by Sandvik Coromant, supplier of tools and tooling solutions to the metalworking industry. Laura Pickering, education and

development co-ordinator at the MTA, said: “We are really pleased to have Sandvik Coromant partner with the E&D Zone for the fourth show running and that some of their young engineers will be on-hand to help inspire visiting students.”

PALLETWAYS INVESTS IN SECOND GERMAN HUB

The Palletways Group, one of Europe’s largest and fastest growing express palletised freight networks, has expanded its services in Germany with the unveiling of a new regional and international hub in the south of the country.

The opening in Neufahrn, near Munich, is Palletways’ second hub

in Germany and follows a successful opening in Hessian Knüllwald- Remsfeld, after having established a regional hub for the Rhine/Ruhr area in Nijmegen/NL. This new hub, supported by the company’s award-winning IT platform and customer service operation, will handle international cargo and is expected to accelerate general cargo traffic to consignors in southern Germany and provide faster routing and better value to customers across southern Europe. Last year, Palletways Germany unveiled a transhipment base in the

Dutch city of Nijmegen to offer customers palletised freight to Belgium, the Netherlands, the UK, Ireland and France. With this, the Group will have invested over 10 million Euros into

the German network since establishing its main central hub in Homberg back in 2011.

• Chemical engineering

graduates have the second highest paid starting salary at £28,603. An engineering and manufacturing apprenticeship can bring an extra £111,900 in lifetime earnings. Verity O’Keefe, head of

education and skills policy at EEF, said: “Tomorrow’s Engineers Week sends up the flare to young people, parents and teachers about the wonderful world of engineering. There are many pathways to choose – whether it’s an ‘earn while you learn’ apprenticeship, or going straight into employment as a graduate.”

/ FACTORYEQUIPMENT UK needs to invest in smart technology

New research from Barclays Corporate Banking shows four in five (83 per cent) manufacturers are confident about Britain’s ability to compete in the international marketplace over the next five years. Two fifths attribute their confidence to ‘fourth industrial revolution’ (4IR) technologies, such as machine learning, sensors and big data, which they believe will boost the productivity of their business. Of those that have already invested, 51 per cent of manufacturers report

that the adoption of 4IR technologies has improved productivity, while just under a third are already seeing return on investment. However, the study also found that while basic forms of automation, like robotics, have a high rate of adoption (76 per cent), two fifths (43 per cent) of manufacturers are yet to invest in 4IR technologies like artificial intelligence. Respondents regarded UK productivity behind countries like China, Japan, South Korea, Germany and Taiwan.

The E&D Zone will be manned by a

team of apprentices and graduates from exhibiting companies at MACH. They will provide guided tours to the students around the entire exhibition. There will be a range of hands-on, interactive activities and educational seminars throughout the week in the E&D Seminar Theatre. In 2016, over 3,500 students

visited the exhibition over five days, and this year that number looks set to increase. The event is free to attend for students and school groups.
