FEATURE INDUSTRIAL CLEANING Engineering a superior

or industrial premises, cleanliness is next to godliness. A hygienic and
hazard-free workplace is essential for employee safety, product excellence, customer perception and a host of other important considerations. The cleanliness of a facility is also
central to efficiency. Employee and machine performance both rely directly on a hygienic working environment; this in turn has a knock-on effect on productivity and also the quality of the finished product. While none of this will come as a surprise to the managers of industrial premises, one aspect that is undoubtedly changing is the materials used to clean this type of facility, with the latest disposable wipes aiming to reduce labour time while improving cleaning performance.
SAVE TIME, SAVE MONEY In industry, rags and cut sheets are often delivered in bulk, and have varying sizes and thicknesses, making it difficult to repeat each cleaning task. Often, they are delivered in large bags that are unsuitable to be transported to a workstation, so workers spend more time fetching clean rags for each task. In food manufacturing premises, for
example, when a line is used to produce different products or flavours, changeovers are needed to clean the line down. Any delays or issues at this stage will have a direct impact on output and production efficiencies.
Whatever the nature of the business, all
production lines require routine maintenance and cleaning, which should be completed to a high standard to avoid additional costs and line stoppages. Rags and paper wipes can generate a
large amount of waste, while linting can also be a problem. Fortunately, recent technological advancements have enhanced the quality of cleaning materials now on offer. The latest generation of disposable wipes and cloths offer all the cleaning prowess of towels but without the requirement for laundry. Today’s single or limited use industrial
wipes offer a convenient, timesaving and economically efficient alternative to disposable paper towels.
VERSATILITY FOR ALL TASKS Engineered fabric and highly absorbent fibres have increased product strength and absorbency, while leading brands are more abrasion resistant than ever with reduced linting. The recently re-launched Chicopee DuraWipe range, for example, is constructed using the company’s patented Spinlace technology, an advanced hydro- entangling process that improves strength and durability while creating highly absorbent fibres. It creates a triple layer construction for improved performance combined with a soft cloth feel. These attributes make the wipes
extremely versatile. Abrasion resistance allows them to be used for more delicate tasks, such as polishing chrome grills and even drying hands, while their durability means they can be used for cleaning grease from machinery or work. Solvent resistant, they can be used in
combination with water, detergents or solvents without deteriorating. This new generation of industrial wipe can be used either wet or dry; they are

Working in industrial environments can lead to many different cleaning tasks, and using and re- using towels and some cloth products isn’t always efficient
Product efficiency, machine performance and workforce safety are all directly linked to the cleanliness of a facility. Fortunately, today’s high-tech industrial wipes are enabling businesses to spend less time and money cleaning workplaces, while achieving better standards of hygiene. James Taylor, marketing director at Berry Global, discusses how
able to absorb fluid in the same way that tissues do while the greater strength and durability reduces waste. Nobody wants to spend a vital section of their working day emptying bins filled with used paper wipes, while the associated high disposal costs are also best avoided.
AWASH WITH SUCCESS Traditional woven cloths can be used to remove stubborn dirt and grease; however, these require laundering regularly, which again adds unnecessary costs in terms of both time and money. The latest premium cloths, designed for
heavier industrial tasks, are an ideal replacement for towels. Boasting superior oil and water absorbency, they are ideal for picking up dirt and grime on rough surfaces, while remaining tear resistant. Some are designed to be washed and used repeatedly at up to 90°C, and are easy to rinse with low linting. Today’s industrial wipes improve
cleaning performance while reducing waste, presenting a cost-effective alternative to paper or low-cost rags. Versatile and durable, it is possible to use one or two options from the same brand to cover a business’s entire cleaning requirements, from drying hands and mopping up spillages to wiping grease from machinery. Chicopee, a brand of Berry Global, is a
supplier of speciality cleaning wipes and materials for the professional market. With more than 40 years’ experience in the market, its products provide a practical and highly effective way of ensuring a clean environment.
