Towards Maturity

This report highlights why it is important to use data effectively, and has found that L&D leaders are struggling to understand data and how it adds value. Earlier this year, Towards Maturity conducted its first L&D Data Pulse report, with more than 150 L&D leaders within a variety of sectors and from organisations of all sizes participating. With this report, we aim to put a stake in the ground for learning leaders who are grappling with the role of data. We combined the insights from our annual Towards Maturity Health Check with specific data drawn from our new L&D Pulse to ask: 1. What is our current relationship with data?

2. What do we need to do to take advantage of the opportunities data provides for the future of our profession and the organisations we support?

This focused review, supported by

way to calculate return on investment. With a history of complex evaluation

systems, 94 per cent of L&D leaders are looking to improve how they gather and analyse data on learning impact. However, only 18 per cent believe they are successful. The L&D relationship with data has so far been somewhat frustrating. What’s more, the new world of data in business creates tremendous opportunity for us in L&D that is beyond our ability to demonstrate value. Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning all generate opportunities to harness data to continually improve the experience and process of learning, as well as the outcome. With this new world of data comes new tools, methodologies, terminology and techniques that, for L&D leaders already struggling with change, can be overwhelming.

Kineo, Filtered and HT2 Labs, explores the importance of measuring and using data to improve learning across businesses. The new review analysis explains why it is important to use data effectively, outlining pathways to success and real impact. The report: ‘L&D’s relationship with data and how to use it effectively’, highlights four key areas that emerged from the Pulse data. L&D leaders expect data to help them review and understand business problems; make suggestions that are beneficial at different levels of the business; track problems; and enhance the learning experience. However, the report also finds that L&D professionals are struggling to understand the data they collect and how it adds value.

Clear barriers came through in the

responses, such as organisations that lack in-house data skills, and an overall lack of knowledge in using the data effectively. As a result, around one in 10 organisations, which, on average, collects data on 14 areas, never analyses

the data they collect, so there are tremendous opportunities for L&D to harness data to continually improve the experience and process of learning across the business. You can download the full Pulse report

About Towards Maturity Towards Maturity’s insights help organisations accelerate effective learning and performance. Their team of analysts have been collecting data on workplace learning for 15 years, which allows for the provision of expert advice and data-driven decisions that lead to real impact. Towards Maturity’s evidence shows that more than 90 per cent of organisations are not realising sustained impact from their learning and performance strategies. By analysing why this is happening they can share stories from top performers who are breaking through the barriers, helping everyone to transform better and faster.
