approaches. Stories shared by those who have learnt in the cauldron of live experimentation and incremental innovation are always great learning experiences. As in previous years, I’ll be looking for the ‘how’ behind the ‘what’ and the ‘why’. I’ll be seeking details about the impact resulting from the implementation. I will be asking questions of presenters both about what worked and what didn’t – often the most difficult area to explore in a public forum, but the richest seam to be mined for new insights and real learning.
We know that culture influences ways of learning, motivation to change, the messages we give and the way they are received
I’m especially excited by the inclusion of several sessions in this year’s conference that focus on culture. The impact of culture in performance is well researched; it is the epitome of evidence-based practice. The role of organisational culture in relation to what people do and how they could do things better cannot be overstated. We know that culture influences ways of learning, motivation to change, the messages we give and the way they are received. We know culture can be our firmest friend and our direst enemy. Culture infuses much of what we will discuss at the World of Learning Conference and Exhibition. Maybe that’s what has changed in the world of L&D. Maybe we have changed our own cultural practices. Maybe we have finally embraced evidence-based practice as the pinnacle of what it means to be involved in learning. n
