GLOBAL NEWS $10.34 BN

The expected value of the global plant-based burger market by 2031, an outlier in the plant-based meat category, which has otherwise stalled

BURGERS ON THE UP IN OTHERWISE DECLINING PLANT-BASED MARKET

It has been just over a decade since plant-based burger companies started to gain traction. Beyond Meat presented its Beyond Burger to the market in 2016 and competitor Impossible Foods received significant funding the year after. Unlike previous incarnations of the non-meat burger, these were produced to emulate the flavor and texture of the meat equivalent and very quickly became very popular. Now, a DataM intelligence research report has reported that the value of the global plant-based burger market has reached $5.42bn and is expected to

almost double in value to $10.34 by 2031. This news comes against a background

of overall decline in plant-based meats, with sales stalling in consecutive years. High price points, problematic textures and uncertainty about the ingredients of the meat replacements are some of the reasons for the decline. It appears that, as an entry point item, the burger is familiar to diners and appeals to those trying to reduce meat consumption.
