Lumbee Tribe Energy Department is Making a Difference for Lumbee Families
By Tony Hunt
The Low Income Housing Energy Assistant Program (LIHEAP) has been such a blessing to the
members of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina. The LIHEAP grant assists members with heating assistance, crisis intervention and weatherization. This energy program is designed to assist families with their heating cost during the winter months, and also assist
families when a crisis arises in their lives. The Low Income Housing Water Assistant Program (LIHWAP) assists tribal members with their monthly water bills and new water services for their homes. The program is designed to help members to receive services from county and city utilities. This helps assure that members have clean and safe drinking water. The
Lumbee Tribe has committed a total of $562,171 dollars to the LIHWAP program since the first of October 2022 and a total of $1,272,120 dollars to the LIHEAP program. These funds have certainly made a difference for members of the Lumbee Tribe.
