Staying active all her life- . and a regular drop of sherry •;>: -have helped sprightly Ethel Cowling reach the grand old ageoflOO.
Ethel celebrated her birth day at Abbeyfleld House, Low Moor, Clitheroe, with aspecial cake, a card from the Queen and a visit from the Mayor and Mayoress of Ribble Valley, Coun Michael Ranson and Mrs Janette Ranson. She was surrounded by
family, neighbours and well- wishers for an enjoyable morning of chat and memo ries. “I’m amazed. 1 didn’t ex pect all this fuss, but I’m en joying it,” said Ethel. “It’s very
. nice when we all get together. It’s bringing memories back” Ethel, originally from Staf
fordshire, lived in Silsden then ' Crosshills, Yorkshire, with her husband Stanley, who used to be a mill foreman, until they moved to the Ribble Valley .

selected after winning the regional titles for engaging every element of the com munity, for demonstrating anexceptionalcommitment to helping the environment, and for top horticultural
r achievement. Delighted Mr Mike
Wedgeworth, chairman of Whalley in Bloom; said: “We are absolutely delighted to . have been put through to the national finals. “This means so much to
everyone: residents, com munity groups, councils, businesses and visitors. It is a great opportunity to make our village an even nicer place than it already is and to engage everyone in showing
shrubsandveginthebusiest places: wearegivingnewlife to tired areas of vacant land and doing all we can to con
serve and restore woodlands and pathways. Even the local river has a community hy droelectricity scheme.” . Whalley will be visited
by two RHS judges who will meet community repre sentatives and go on a tour of local projects. Judges will assess everything from lo cal recycling initiatives to areas of natural habitat and conservation. They will also be looking at the manage-. ment of street furniture and public parks. Results will be announced at an awards cer emony this October and will be attended by representa tives of all 70 finalists.
