ordon and Ann Sharp’s pres entation, “Spellbound”, cer- inly wove some magic for eir audience at Clitheroe ivic Society! Inwondertheyweretrans-
orted along the Lancashire/ orkshire border, visiting
he “Weaver’s Triangle” in urnley - a modern name for regenerated area which still -
hounds with remnants of the ay when Lancashire led the orld in the production of cot
on cloth. Standing on a triangle
f land on the banks of the ,eeds/Liverpool Canal, there, re still weaving sheds and pinning mills in the area. In Briercliffe the unique
working textile museum oused in the Queen Street Mill gave some idea of the past,
'as the huge boiler which ran the engines which powered the 600 Lancashire looms was viewed... and the noise came to life! An invitation from the owners of stately Towneley Hall was then proffered and a walk through this original home with its period furni ture gave aglimpse ofho w “the other half” lived.
Through the pretty villag
es on and over the border was next-Winewall,Trawdenand Lothersdale - with time to en
joy some oftheir annual show. Thornton-in-Craven and East Martdn, with its pretty situa tion on the canal bank, was fol- lowedbyavisittoDavidBinns, ■ a wonderful wildlife painter who divulged some of his se crets. . . Hellifield,Downham, with
its beautiful views of the “Big End” of Pendle, and down in-
'to Bolton-by-Bowland to visit the forge of the village black smith, not the bearded, sack ing clothed smith of old, but an enthusiastic and welcoming young man, named Steve Mar shall. He explained his idea of using old horseshoes to bring to life a rearing horse, it truly was spectacular... as was the fish eagle made from straight ened horseshoes! The assembly of this won
der was shown and brought forth the skill needed to fuse these “pieces of iron” togeth er, A ram’s head poker looked far easier to construct but still with much skill. Gordon next introduced
a hotpotch of “off-cuts” with matching rhyme - the result was hilarious and Ann round ed off the evening on a couple of delightful and humorous compilations of her very own - the chocolate factory of Whittaker’s of Skipton as no-one has ever seen it before - chocolates whizzing here . and there to the strains of the Trish-TrashPolka-whatelse? - until they all fell exhausted into the waiting boxes ready
■ to be sold. And finally, you should have seen the bottles and jars
. from Ann’s kitchen march in . formation through her home, through the open windows and up and down the garden path. A magic and spellbind ing finish to ajourney to beat all others. The Sharps met with re
sounding applause before be ing thanked by chairperson Pauline Wood. Thenextmeetingon March
gth at 7-30 pm will see Harriet Roberts introducing“TheBur- ied Treasure of James Dixon” - the history of Blackburn Or phanage which James Dixon founded in 1891. '
