many we have seen where there was a clear lack of appreciation of the urgency of the patient’s situ ation. Cauda equina syndrome is treatableandsuffererscanmake a complete recovery. at the Royal Blackburn Hospital also failed to take urgent action andClairewaslefttodeteriorate.” Claire’s ordeal began in Au
gust, 2010, when she began to suffer severe pain in her back which radiated down her legs. Claire was referred for an MRI scan, whichtookplaceatamobile unit operated by a private com pany butcontracted by the NHS. The MRI showed a prolapsed disc which was pressing on the cauda equina nerves at the base of Claire’s spine. The nerves are responsible for sensation in the lowerhalfofthebodyandbowel, bladder and sexual function. However, the radiographer
failed to treat it as an emergency, as did the radiologist at the Royal Blackburn Hospital when they received the scan report. Three days later Claire began
to show “red flag signs" of cauda equina syndrome, including an abnormal sensation in her bow els, numbness in her groin and saddle area and difficulty pass
ing urine. Claire’s GP suspected caudaequinasyndromeandcon-

A teenage sky diver has raised more than £1,000 for the Brit ish Heart Foundation. Daring James Parsons,
who is only 16, had only been in a plane once before when he decided that doing a 14,000 feet sky dive with the Black Knights team at Grange over Sands was just the challenge he needed. He said: “I did feel nervous
at first, but the thrill of doing it soon took over from that.” James, who lives in Slaid-
burn with his parents, Reuben and Joanne and sisters, Eliza beth (18) and 14-year-old Rose, has just started studying for his A Levels at Clitheroe Royal Grammar School Sixth Form Centre. He set himself a target of raising £400 for the British
Heart Foundation, so was thrilled to bits when he more than doubled that amount. The total raised now stands at £1,075 and James is hoping for more donations through his justgiving page. James added: “When I
found out that heart disease was the biggest killer in the UK I felt that the British Heart Foundation was the best char ity to raise money for as it does so much good work into re search. I want to thank eve ryone immensely for their support and kindness for this great cause.” The British Heart Foun
dation was founded in 1961 by a group of medical profes sionals wanting to fund extra research into the causes, diag nosis, treatment and preven tion of heart and circulatory disease. Duringthe past 50 years it has helped to trans form the landscape of heart disease.
Clitheroe Fire Station will hold an open day on Sunday, October 12th, from 11am to 4pm. There will be a host of attractions including stalls, face painting, quizzes, crafts and games. Firefighters will be car
rying out demonstrations of the different techniques they have to use in a variety of sit uations and the British Red
Cross will be on there. Entry is free but there will
be some fund-raisingfor the firefighters’ charity.
