Valley’s ‘silvers’ urged to celebrate getting older
Senior citizens in the Ribble Valley are invited to celebrate
being older at a special event in Longridge. Ribble Valley Borough Coun-
■ cil has joined forces with the Ribble Valley Seniors’ Forum, Age UK Lancashire, Longridge Town Council and Lancashire County Council to host the event at Longridge Civic Hall on Monday from 1 to 4 pm. The event, which includes
entertainment by Phil Knight and Friends, afternoon tea and advice on a host of services for the elderly, including staying
warm in winter, is part of Older People's Day, the national cel ebration of the achievements and contributions to society of older people. Ribble ValleyBoroughCoun-
cil partnership officer Dilys Day said: “Older People’s Day aims to challenge negative attitudes and outdated stereotypes that existabouttheelderly. “It also aims to promote
healthy lifestyles, combat lone liness and encourage the shar ing of skills between different generations. ■ “We are inviting the bor
ough's older residents to join us for what promises to be a fabulous afternoon and let the world know that they are very much full of life.” Admission to the event is
free, but by ticket only on a first come, first served basis. Tickets are available the Rib ble Valley Borough Council Of fices in Church Walk, Clitheroe, or Longridge Civic Hall in Cal- der Avenue. Drop-in sessions for over 50s
Do you want to learn how to use a tablet or IPad? Do you need some help setting up an email address or searching the internet? AgeUK Lancashire, along
with Lancashire Libraries, is hosting drop in sessions for “silver surfers” in libraries. If you’re over 50 just call in with your gadget, if you have one,
between 9-30 to 11-30 am on Tuesdays at Whalley Library or at the same time on Thurs days at Clitheroe Library. Linda Salazar, services
co-ordinator at Age UK Lan cashire, said: “We used to of fer six- week courses, but are finding now that a lot of old er people would rather learn how to use a tablet or simply
set up an email account or do some research on the inter net. These sessions are free and there’s no need to book. Ourwonderfiilly talented vol unteers will be on hand tohelp you out with your query.” • For more details call
