Maybenotasearthshatter- ing as die other events, but the Viva - which ran until 1979 in three main incarnations-was the car which really saw the Griffinbadgegainmomentum in the UK. ' • nonsense, inexpensive fam ily car with ease of mainte nance, which certainly strikes a chord today. So what better time than
a totally fresh Viva for today’s drivers?' . Its raison d’etre hits the
target. With a familiar name, compact footprint, appealing economy and affordability,
Vauxhall’s new city car ticks plenty of boxes. But it’s up against some pretty stiff op position, such as the popular Hyundai iio, Skoda Citigo and newcomer Suzuki Celerio.’so how does it match up? Well, the Viva does have
plenty going for it. The entry model Viva SE 1.0 1 tested is £7.995 and does what it says on the can - it’s thrifty, quite fun to drive, easy to park and manoeuvre and has a certain charm, although i t doesn’t breaks the mould in any par ticular field. In terms of looks, the Viva
isn’t particularly characterful andblendsinwiththe crowd. Yet it is undeniably well made, which will stand it in good stead against much of th e opposition. In particular thfe interior
looks built to last the test of time and motorists may bear in mind the example of the stablemate Corsa in terms of longevity. Inside, the Viva makes the most of every inch of space

and can sit four adults in rel ative comfort - rear legroom is surprisingly good. The flip side to this isatinybootwhich can hold only a few bags of shopping with seats in place. But Vauxhall redeems itself whenmaximumluggagespace is needed - the rear seats flip and roll down to provide max imum room and a true level load platform, unlike some rivals. The dashboard features
some of the tiniest displays I have seen on a car, but all in strumentation falls easily to hand. Strange grouping of in fo in the top right of the mini ature infotainment screen is a puzzling quirk. With no s tandard USB,
digital radio, Bluetooth or air-con, Viva risks putting off some younger generation-

even at speed. It’s undenia bly slow and needs plenty of right foot encouragement to make good progress, yet holds its own well in the u ppe r regis ters and isn ’t

Despite slightly vague
steering, the Viva gives a decent account of itself in terms of agility and can cor
