Householders in the Rib ble Valley are invited to give draughty homes the cold shoulderatafreedraught- proofing workshop being

stagedinthe borough. The workshop will take place at the Ribble Valley Borough Council Chamber in Church Street, Clitheroe, on Tuesday, October 20th. It will outline simple steps to make properties warmer

and reduce energy bills. It will particularly concen

trate on detecting draughts, improving ventilation and preventing damp. Energy advisor Andrew

Northcott, of Cumbria Action for Sustainability, will also

demonstratehowto select and fit the most effective draught proofing products. These include both win

dow and door seals, chimney balloons and radiator reflec tor panels. Ribble Valley Borough

Council housing officer John Barber said that it was easy to keep properties warm and cosy with the right knowledge and advise. “No-one likes to live in a

draughty house,” said Mr Bar ber.

s “Apart from the discom fort, it is a waste of money if the air that you have paid to heat simply escapes through the gaps in your property. “Most houses have cracks

andgaps through which warm air escapes and cold air seeps in.

“For example between and around floorboards, around

windows and doors, through the letter box, where pipe work comes through exter nal walls, around the loft hatch and around electrical fittings. “Draught-proofing is easy

and, as householders will dis cover at this free workshop, a bit of DIY can go a long way in plugging the gaps and keeping

• homes cosy.” •. The workshop is in the

evening and will start at 7 pm. Light refreshments will be served. Admission to the event is

free, but places must be pre booked with Mr Barber. Anyone wishing to at

tend the free workshop and gain valuable advice on how to keep their homes draught free should telephone the Rib ble Valley Borough Council of fices on 01200 425111 to book their place.

Every little helps appeal at town’s Tesco supermarket

A collection at Clitheroe’s Tesco supermarket held over two days raised £627.15 for the Rosemere Cancer Foundation’s new Rosemere Burnley Chemotherapy Unit Appeal. T h e a p p e a l ; w h ich

launched in September, is aiming to raise £100,000 for a new world class chem otherapy unit at Burnley General Hospital, which is a treatment centre frequently used by Ribble Valley cancer patients. Plans for the state-of-the-

art unit have been drawn up by East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust, which manages Burnley General Hospi tal and is also contributing £100,000 to the costs. The project is due to go out to tender shortly, with a win ter build and a spring open ing scheduled. Once it has been built,

the new chemotherapy unit will replace Burnley Gener al Hospital’s current much smaller chemotherapy suite, which although providing an excellent level ofcarehasno room to expand or for ad

ditional, updated facilities. Around 4,000 chemo

therapy treatments are now delivered annually at Burnley General Hospital, but this is a figure that is increasing year on year be cause o f improving cancer care and an aging popula tion. There was concern that

the current suite was be coming too small to meet de mand and that some patients would have to be referred to hospitals further away for chemotherapy treatment. The new unit has also

been designed specifical ly around patients’ needs to maximise comfort and ensure a treatment envi ronment that is second to none, which according to documented medical re search can help improve patients’ response to treat ment, bringing about better results. Rosemere’s appeal is be

ing led by its East Lancashire fundraising co-ordinator Dan Hill. For further details and to support the appeal, call Dan on 01772 528346.
