and the school, and to en courage engagement with all our youth competitions. The pupils also get the chance to find out about our massive service organisation and what it does both in the local community and also across theworld.” ;

Sabden rat run’ speed danger
Sabdenresidentshavevoiced their concerns that the main roads through the village are fast becoming traffic “rat _ runs”. Fears have been voiced
about speeds on Padiham Road and Clitheroe Road, but villagers have said Whalley Road is also affected. After meetings with Lan
cashire County Council over the past few years, local par ish councillors have made suggestions as to how the problem could be addressed, and a speed indicator device (SPID)hasnowbeeninstalled on Padiham Road. - Coun. Tony Haworth,
chairman of Sabden par ish council, said: “The SPID seems to be having a certain amount of effect, but this may change as drivers get used to it being there. “Wehavesuggested a small
trafflcisland at the mainjunc- tion of Whalley and Clithe roe Road and an illuminated crossing for the children on their way to and from school, but the suggestions have nev er been taken up by LCC. “Traffic is busy from 5 to 10

War memorial tree scheme more than
half-way complete An ambitious scheme to plant trees in Ribble Valley’s 35 parishes in memory of the borough’s First World War fallen has reached the half way mark. Oak trees have been
planted in more than 20 parishes, and plans are in the pipeline for the remain der to be placed to mark the 100th anniversary of the
outbreak of the First World War. The trees will all bear
plaques in memory of the hundreds of young Ribble Valley men who lost their lives during the Great War of 1914-18.

Valley, Coun Michael Ran- son, who lost a great-uncle in the war, said: “We are all
