Is your cat diabetic?
IABETES mellitus is a common problem
“ 1 in dogs and cats, as it is in humans. It is f a condition associated with a hormone produced by the pancreas called insulin. Dogs tend to suffer from Type 1 diabetes,
which is a primary failure to produce insulin. Cats, like people, tend to suffer from Type 2
diabetes, where the insulin initially doesn't work properly, due to factors such as obesity, but as a result is soon associated with a reduction in the production of insulin as well. Insulin is needed to transfer glucose from the
blood into the cells and organs of the body to provide them with energy. Failure to do this results in the clinical signs seen in diabetes. The high blood glucose concentration causes a dramatically increased thirst and excessive urination, whereas the failure to provide the cells and organs with the glucose results in tiredness, weakness, weight loss and increased hunger. Diagnosis is easy, and is usually confirmed
with a urine sample and with a blood sample Early diagnosis and treatment is important as
HAVE YOU BEEN
LETDOWN' We draw the
line at property negligence
cataracts (seen in dogs), cystitis, neurological problems and life-threatening ketoacidosis often develop if left untreated. So if you do suspect your pet is drinking a lot more than it used to, and perhaps it appears to be losing weight despite having a good appetite, then please contact your vet. Following initial stabilisation, treatment
usually involves daily insulin injections by the owner and regular blood sugar checks with the vet, together with lifestyle changes such as a new feeding regime, regular exercise and possibly weight loss. Not every case is easy to treat or manage, but the majority often go on to lead a relatively normal life. As is the case with Jack Earnshaw, a British
short-haired cat. The owners had recently moved house and noticed Jack was drinking much more than he used to and, though he had always been a big cat, he seemed to have lost weight recently. Diabetes was diagnosed, and he soon started insulin treatment. He is responding well and is now a much happier cat.
