Tractor drivers raise funds for air ambulance Fund-raisers only needed to look up to see what their effort was in aid of

As a team from North West Air Ambulance dashed to an emergency call-out, they flew over another team of 48 trac tor drivers on their own mis sion - to raise funds for the very charity they saw flying overhead. The Chipping Tractor Run

was on its 45-mile journey, taking in Bleasdale, Brock Bot toms and Calderdale before stopping for lunch at Lancas ter Auction Mart. The cavalcade then drove

through the Trough of Bow- land to Dunsop Bridge and Leagram Estate where an off road section was enjoyed by permission of Mr Weld-Blun- dell and Leagram residents. Organisers Stuart and

Four years ago and aged just, Bel Young, from Skipton, suf fered a catastrophic arid life changing accident. Whilst playing on a climbing frame, she fell and broke her neck. Now, paralysed from the

neck down, Bel is reliant on a ventilator to breathe, requires 24-hour care and physiother apy for up to two hours a day. Her uncle, Nick Young (43),

who lives in Rimington, swam the English Channel earli er this month, smashing his fund-raising target of£so,ooo to buy a hydrotherapy pool for Bel to helps her muscles relax. Father-of-three Nick said:

“The water was calm to be gin with, but soon started to get rougher. We didn’t see the sun all day due to thick cloud cover, and with a biting North erly wind and rain it made for a very cold swim. “I was swimming among

the huge ferries and tankers. There were plenty of jelly fish who showed this stranger no mercy whatsoever! “When I finished the swim

New pupils in the reception class at a Clitheroe prima ry school have been made welcome with home-made gingerbread men. The Friends of Clitheroe

St James CE Primary School welcomed the 52 re c ep tion children with the home -made delights as well as the usual flurry o f letters and routines. Nicola Price, who is chair

person of the Friends, said: “It’s lovely to see so many new facesjoining St James’ recep

tion class. This year’s recep tion group includes my own son, who was especially ex cited about the Teddy bears’ picnic they had in the school grounds. I’m excited to see how they grow and hope to raise lots of funds to provide those extra items for the children too.” Mrs Kellington, Miss

smooth transition to school. The children have enjoyed various activities, includ ing meeting new friends, exploring fresh environ ments and ideas plus family iarising themselves with the routines of school life. The gingerbread men

given to the new pupils carried invites for parents to

join the PTA. Funds are being raised

to buy new play equipment for the Key Stage One play ground.

in a time of 13 hours and 41 minutes, I walked out of the surf onto the beach and faced the boat. I raised my hands triumphantly and said: ‘I am a Channel swimmer - 18 months of hard training has paid off’. “Out o f six solo channel

swim attempts that day, only two were successful - mine and another. Four didn’t make

it. The support from family andfriendsandthepublichas been overwhelming and we have raised nearly £80,0001 “I thank everyone who has

“I completed a lot of train

ing at Ribblesdale Pool and the staff, John, Neil, Laura, Dave and Anne were very support ive.”

Prolific speaker Cliff calls it a day with final Probus talk

Always a firm favourite, Cliff Astin spoke to his fellow members o f Clitheroe and District Probus Club at their most recent ineeting. Sadly and memorably, he

said that after many years speaking to outside organi sations - and no less than 28 presentations to the club - he was now ceasing to be an active speaker. However, he then light

ened the mood by providing 45 minutes o f quotations un der the title “Don’t You Wish You Hadn't Said That!” With school and student

howlers, newspaper mis- pryits, unfortunate punctua tion and quotes from people who Should know better, he engendered the full range of reactions from a wry smile to loud laughter from his audience. This talk, and a few other

light-hearted presentations in the past, were all part of the armouryofpresentationsthat. Cliff has accumulated over the

years. The majority were slide shows, where carefully select ed photos of scenery, build ings and events educated, intrigued and enthralled his audiences in many other organisations in the UK, quite apart from Clitheroe and District Probus Club. The research which went

that rare but fascinating fact. To mentionjust a few from

the Clitheroe Probus pro grammes, the club has been taken on a “visit” to South Africa, “explored” Lancashire villages, “ travelled” around Malta, enjoyed the coast al scenery of Italy, “toured” North Wales and then locally “gone” to Whalley, delved in to folklore and wild flowers, traced both the Ribble and the Thames from source to sea, and then examined Cheshire. And all those were at his

local Probus Club, never mind the dozens of other clubs and societies who had invited him, repeatedly in many cases, to entertain, amuse, and educate them for an hour or so. Club member John Adey

brought this rather emotional final curtain to a close by reflecting, most fittingly, on Cliff’s stellar career, and asked for and received a rous ing round of applause as the members expressed their ap preciation.
