Polo. It used to be such asmall car. Almost insignificant when
'"s compared with the beefier Golf.
But VW’s baby has grown up to such an extent that it is no longer the smallest in the family. The oddly-named Up!
g now carries that distinction and Polo is nowa fully-fledged, well-equipped family hatch. In fact, it’s so big it’s now as
big as the Golf used to be. The result is a car which rides bet ter and is much more lavishly equipped. It isn’t the best-looking car.
In fact, if thereds one real criti cism of the Polo it is that it is plain and simple compared
Golf. Not that VW owners seem to find. Substance over style seems to be their motto. That’s not to say its style
hasn’t improved. It is a much prettier, sleeker and more up market affair than earlier Po los but still dowdy compared to some of its rivals. Tested here is Polo SE pow
ered by a one litre three cylin der engine. Sounds weedy? Well, the o to 6omph time seems slow (i5-5 seconds) but the engine sounds and feels much brisker. Importantly, it offers
6o.impg on a run and even touches sompg around town. You see why now VW’s are regarded as sensible choic es.

The crossover SUV market is such a crowded battleground that its sometimes hard to see the wood for the trees.

This is one of our favourite buying markets, dominated by the Nissan Qashqai which still rules the streets but also shared by top dogs such as VW Tiguan, Skodas Yeti, Kia Sportage, Mazda CX-5, Hy undai ix35 and so on. In the midst of this cross
over crush is the Mitsubi shi ASX4, which now boasts a more muscular 2.2 diesel engine and a six-speed auto transmission in its armoury. ASX4 is the 4WD version

- most rivals also boast that option but the majority of buy ers tend to go for the cheaper front-wheel drive mainstream models. I think they are missing
out. The 4WD set-up, barely mentioned in detail by the ma
jority of the motoring press, is a Eodsend in winter and such
a safety bonus that I’d have it every time, funds permitting. Mitsubishi’s offering here
is operated by a large button on the console to select from 2WD, 4WD and 4WD Lock, ef fectively providing two extra grades oftraction togetyou up a snowy/muddy hill or grind your way but of trouble. The car is no Land Rover
but it does have an extra use ful string to its bow that is of ten under-estimated. The larger2.2 diesel engine
(there’s also 1.8) now comes with an auto option that I also applaud. Regular readers will know that I always laud auto matics over manuals and the latest Mitsubishi offering is well worth looking at. Not only does it take the
strain during nightmare ur ban traffic snarl-ups, but it also allows the driver a range of choices to suit conditions. The ASX’s set-up comes
with a straight 6-speed auto; a manualover-rideviaasequen- tial stick shift; or paddle shift- ers behind the steering wheel. In the case of the ASX, this works verv well. The 2.2 diesel
unit needs a really heavy foot to pull out some early accel eration and is more at home with mid-range overtaking and long distance cruising, when it is at its quietest and most refined. Rather than havine vour
right foot in the carpet all the time early on, I found it best to swap cogs with the paddles. This allows you to hold the car through the gears ‘manually’ without taking your hands from the wheel and control the sDeed build-UD more ac-
curately. Then you can drop it back into standard auto set ting Drive when you’ve hit the desired speed. The mid-sized ASX is one
of the better looking current generation of crossover SUVs with Dlentv of character and

harmonious lines. It’s not the styleofvehicle to blitz through country lanes or tackle heavy cornering, mainly because you are likely to have four passengers on board and it’s a high-riding vehicle. But ride quality is one of
the best in class and opulent leather front seats offer bags of support and are infinitely adjustable, thanks to all-elec tric controls. A high and com manding driving position is also welcome and a panoram ic all-over sunroof provides a light, airy interior. Minus marks? Onboard
technology isn’t that intui tive and the sat nav set up is fiddly. But a mass of onboard gear and bags ofluggagespace make this a practical, versatile vehicle. •
