Action needed

atblackspot I wonder if any of your readers were witness to what could have been a very serious (pos sibly fatal) collision at the traf fic light junction bn the Whal- ley/Accrtngton Road and the . A671 at Spring Wood on April 1st at approximately 4-45 pm. I need the registration number or just the name of ' the wagon involved. The ve hicle “jumped” the lights on amber at high speed travelling towards the A59 and almost hit our vehicle, asmallredcar turning right towards Whal- ley.

Having waited on red at the traffic lights by Spring Wood, we moved into position and waited to allow all the traffic travelling towards the A59 to pass. We then proceeded to turn right into Whailey as the lights turned to amber and ■ vehicles were clearly coming to a halt. The wagon didnotstop with other traffic, but continued

•at high speed and there was almost a collision, which could certainly have involved not only my vehicle, but other ve hicles waiting to exit from the' Whailey Road. Which brings me to another request - 1 suggest that the proposed reduction on this

junction to asomph speed limit will be useless. What is needed is for all traffic on the A671 moving towards the A59 to be held at a standstill on a continuing red whilst a filter green arrow gives priority to traffic making the right turn into the Whailey Road. Only then would it be possible to proceed safely. If you are familiar with this

junction perhaps someone with more expertise than I could set up an online petition to persuade the authorities to realise that not only is this

junction famous for serious accidents, but there are also unreported near-misses. We need action now before some one dies! Mrs Gertrude Robins, Manorfields, Whailey

My points still hold true!

In his Ietterlast week Mr Wolstencroft made out some points why he will still support his Mend, Nigel Evans.

The points in my (so-called

■ rhetoric and insinuation) letter are still valid. Over the past four General Elections there has been a constant two- thirds of the voters in the Rib- ble valley who DID NOT vote for Mr Wolstencroft party A figure of 52,000 voters on average every time. Regarding Mr Wolstencroft’s friend not being involved in any expenses fiddle, that may be correct, but can his friend explain the many freebie exot ic overseas trips he has made at the expense to the public purse of £3,000 to £4,000 a time (www.independent. co.uk - “after the fiddles comes the freebies”). Some misguided people in the Valley may think that the sun shines out of Mr Evans’ backside, but 52,000 think otherwise. I have noted that a train ticket to Swansea only costs £175 one way, just a thought. RonLoebell,

Edisford, Clitheroe NIGEL EVANS MP

I’m mystified as to what ourMP actually does

Nigel Evans wants to remain as our MP again at the next election. You may want to ask yourself, what exactly does Nigel Evans do as our MP, because I for one have no idea. I have directly asked Mr Evans oh numerous occasions to pro vide transparency in his role as our MP in Westminster, but unfortunately the only trans parency we have is regarding the details in his private life. The transparency we need is what he is actually doing for his MP’s salary. It is very difficult not to jump' to the wrong conclusions about how he represents his constituents, because when asked bn numerous occasions to provide this information, he has not done so. In fact below is Mr Evans’ re sponse to an email I sent him lastyearregardingdevelop- . ment in the Ribble Valley: “Hopefully I have answered this e mail by the answer I have given earlier.... Asyou can see a 7.53 am response and earlier responses is me getting on with myjob representing youandstandingupforclear iqjustices in the planning sys tem where they exist.” I replied: “Dear Mr Evans, you have not answered this email

in the slightest and I have ab solutely no idea as to how ex

actly you are representing the Ribble Valley in Parliament.

Now please have the courtesy to address my concerns below and explain in detail exactly what you are doing about the matter, for there is absolutely no evidence that your current actions have or are going to have any effect. I can actu ally see by the 7:53 response that you have certainly taken the time to reply to my email. Howeveryou have failed to ad dress any ofthe points within it, so I have no idea how that can be classified in any shape or form as representing your constituents." I did not receive any further clarification. Mr Evans’ position is now completely compromised, after undergoing all his recent trials and tribulations, he is now back in the Tory fold and undoubtedly will not want to upset any apple carts. As he has been courting media headlines for quite a while, he will clearly not want to cause further embarrassment to his party. Lastweekanarticleinthe Advertiser said it all: “MP wel comes plan by Tories to limit spread of turbines”. This article speaks volumes about Mr Evans, he doesn’t appear to actually tackle any issues, he agrees with lots of things, is very sympathetic, readily appears for photo op portunities, generally passes on constituents' letters, but is actually toothless. We deserve an MP who is go ing to tackle issues head-on, fight for the Ribble Valley and doggedly fight for his constitu ents no matter who that up sets or even if it undermines his role in the Conservative Party. How does Mr Evans serve his constituents? Never mind if Mr Evans welcomes plan by

Tories to limit spread of tur bines. it would be great to establish from our MP were exactly he stands on the fracking debate and what concerns has he already risen in Parliament. With the failure of successive governments to address the energy needs ofthe UK, frack ing is clearly here to stay. The Conservative Government have clearly made their inten tions known and are forming policy to start this new energy production. They are currently attempt

ing to financially incentivise local authorities, who through

austerity measures are fac ing huge funding shortfalls,

into agreement. As fracking

is undoubtedly going to affect the Ribble Valley, it would be great to know in some capac-

ity'just how Nigel Evans been proactively addressing this is sue. This is a question I put to Mr Evans in July last year. I am still awaiting any response.

Never mind if Mr Evans wel comes plan by Tories to limit spread of turbines. Does he welcome the plan by Tories to build on any available bit of land and destroy our country side? Mr Evans is undoubt edly partly culpable for our housing development crises. He has been negligent in his role as our MP in questioning, challenging and attacking this governmental policy from the outset. This policy has happened on his watch. Thousands of Rib ble Valley residents have made their views verycleartohim. His actions, unless he can pro vide some transparency, have come long after this policy has been put into action. The ac tions he has put into place are reactionary and are going to have very little effect. We need a proactive MP, not a reactive one to challenge Westminster decisions before they turn into government policy when are virtually impossible to reverse. “Putting decisions in the hands of local people” was a ta gline used by the Conservative Party with regard to the Local ism Bill. In fact nothing could be further from the truth, local people have absolutely no say in local decisions. The Core Strategy document was “sold” to the community on al lowing thenitobepartofthe decision making process. Mr Evans has also been very quiet over the new 11% pay rise for MPs - another example of just how we are all in this together. Maybe he and his fel low MPs will be donating this extra cash to some deserving cause instead of lining their own pockets. I raised this is sue with Mr Evans again in Julylastyear;MrEvanshas avoided answering this ques

tion and certainly not to my knowledge made a public

statement. How many readers have en

joyed the luxury of an 11% pay rise over the past year, let alone the past sixyears?

I would be very interested to see how our public servants are spending their time and

just how accountable they are. Please Mr Evans could you en lighten us?

Rounders match Chipping YFC members

met on Monday for a rounders match against the Parent Ad visory Committee. Thinking they had the evening sewn up before they started, the mem bers were surprised at the agility and speed the parents displayed. Gaining on the members

during the first two rounds as the YFC were continuously bowled out at the first post, the parents showed a promis ing performance. With some fantastic

catches by Johnny Smith and Stephen Gornall and senior Seed, Morris and Holden in their best running shoes, rounders started to mount up for the parents and the prospect of defeat for the YFC loomed. With rain threatening and

the light fading, the parents’ visibility became impaired and their shoes started to slide. As the parents were drop

ping scores, Steward Liz Gor nall questioned their change of bowler and a tactical double back-stop to counter Louise, the left-handed batter, but it was to no avail. The parents had to admit

defeat and chairman Matt Par kin admitted they had been very good sports and an enter taining evening had been had by all. Next week’s meeting is the annual RABI Treasure Hunt which members will be supporting.
