You can'tstay in sports car all your life, as much as you might like to.
This is something I’ve discov ered the hard way, but main ly because the kind of family car that ordinarily wouldn't appeal has suddenly become highly desirable. The Honda Civic is a sharp-

looking and thoroughly modern machine but it’s the hatchback that you as a styl ish twenty-something would want to buy, right? Estates are for people with dogs, children or antiques to haul about.' I’m certainly guilty of two
out of the three but far more relevant is that modern estates aren’tjust vans with windows, whichiswhyl’mhappilytaking the plunge with a Civic Tourer for the next six months. Looks and image: For start
ers, it’s certainly in the running for the best-looking estate on
the market. It has curves and lines thatyoujust don’t expect from something with a biglug- gage area at the back. Partly this is to achieve excellent aer-. odynamics but it’s also very easy on the eye. It’s only when you stop and give it a real going over that you realise just how radical it is. Space and practicality: But
this is still a Honda, so sensi ble comes as standard. The - Tourer offers up 624 litres of boot space with the seats up, and with the seats down and packed to the roof this goes up to a mammoth 1,668 litres. That’s not the whole story though. For starters there’s a very sizeableunder-floor ar ea (117 litres to be precise) that should prove extremely use ful. And because the Civic’s fu el tank isunderthefront seats rather than the rears, the seats fold almost perfectly flat in an instant. Behind the wheel: It’s the
same story in the cabin itself. Likethehatchbackthelayoutis a little unusual with the digital

lumbar and side supports will no doubt come in useful given the amount of time that will be spent in the hot seat. In the engine room it’s a
bit of a no-brainer. The petrol option is a fine thing but with an official combined figure of 72.4mpg is too tempting to re sist. It’s only the bigger wheels
on the higher-specification versions that stops it sneaking under the 99g/km ofbarrier, so hopefully fuel station visits will be few and far between. The Tourer will have to deal

display at the top and the ana logue instruments below, and there’s an information screen up the top while the infotain ment system sits in the middle. It all makes sense when you’re sitting behind the wheel - time
and miles will prove whether it makes sense to live with. There’s plenty of storage too andlotsofconnectionsforall sorts of devices I don’t even own, but I’ll be sure to ask the kids what I need to buy.
• Specification-wise I’m for
tunate enough to have the EX- Plus version which has the figurative kitchen sink includ ed as standard. Keyless entry and go is a nice luxury to have and the electrically adjustable
with kids, a dog, my other halfs propensity to treat gloveboxes and door bins as an extension to her make-up bag and a lot of hacks up and down the motor way. I suspect long-term tests don’t come any tougher than this. This car summed up in a
single word: Honed If this car was a...: Kitchen
gadget, it wouldbea multi-pur- pose.blender that can do eve rything but also look good on yourworktop.

It drives well, it has steer
ing that is light, efficient and confidence inspiring, it’s com fortable for all occupants and it won’t cost you the earth. Think eight and a half grand for starters. And don’t forget that being
a Hyundai, it comes with a five year unlimited mileage war ranty package, which you can pass on to subsequent owners if you don’t notch up the full term yourself. What wehave here is a little

Bit too eager at times, when the lightness of the con trols (pedals, gearchange) can have fellow motorists think ing it’s a bit quicker than it ac tually is. Its I09mph top speed is ad
equate enough, and its light and positive steering deals adequately with town driving. It doesn’t suffer unduly
from road noise and the lev el of handling they have built in to the chassis means it can go about its business without unsettling the occupants too much. iio has a long wheelbase,
meaning there’s decent inte rior space and also gives the ride and handling character istics of a far larger car. And even thought the en
gine is at times working hard, what’s happening under the bonnet is fairly well insulated from the interior. It’s certainly no worse than any other vehi
cle in the city car class - and much better than some. The interior is neatly laid
out with clear instrumenta tion and dials that are easy to use. And for your money you get the good things in motor ing life like air conditioning, electric windows, tintedglass, centre locking, a plethora of. air bags and an RDS radio/CD/ MP3 with plenty speakers. Youdon’tget alloy wheels in
its £9795 pricetag (1.2SE 87ps), but there’s precious little else you need to add to the package. In use the iio is an eager lit-

tie worker and even though it has compact overall dimen sions space is surprisingly good, even for people like me on the wrong side of six foot four. You might feel a bit like you’re wearing it, but, horses for courses, it’s a ideal option for Mr and Mrs Average-Fam ily- a full five seater and with a decent load area whenyou fold the rear seats down. The fact you see so many
on the roads is proof, were it needed, that Hyundai got it
right when they drew up this model.
