I Why are some people hungry I even in the Ribble Valley?
I On Saturday, the St Mary’s I Centre in Church Street, Clit- I heroe, will host a conference I to explore the reasons for con-
I tinuing food poverty at home I and abroad and to find out
I what can be done to make a difference.
Conference chairman, An drew Whitehead, said: “We,
want to find out why hunger is still a mgjor issue in our 21st
[ century world whether over- seas or here in the Ribble Val ley where our foodbank has already served i;ooo clients in just nine months." “Feed a friend” will start at
9_30 am with findings about food poverty locally from Ruth Haldane, the manager of the Ribble Valley Foodbank. The conference will also hear about positive steps to
tackle food poverty in Kenyan schools from the Solomon Project, which is actively sup
ported by The Grand in Clit heroe. It will also hear from
Fred Uttley, who is a Cafod representative living in Si- monstone. Mr Uttley cy cles across the country to encourage action to tackle poverty. Dave Hardman, of Christian Aid, will highlight the steps which can be tak
en to achieve lasting change. “Feed a friend” marks the
beginning of Christian Aid week. “Before making our do nations, we want to learn more
aboutsomeoftheneedsacross our world and the practical
steps being taken to tackle them” said Revd. Whitehead. “We look forward to welcom ing all those who have regis tered on our website and also
those whoare keen tojoinusat the St. Mary’s Centre without registering in advance”. “Feed a friend” will con

I Scouting numbers have increased in Clitheroe with more girls, boys and adults seeking out everyday adven ture.
More than 12 extra young
female Scouts, an increase of 2.1% on last year, have signed up to the adventure-based challenges of Scouting. The increase in member
ship numbers locally reflects the latest census figures nationally, which have just
been published. This data pro vides evidence of sustained growth across the UK for the ninth consecutive year with a membership total of over 550,000. Josh McCrerie, an Explor
er Scout from Clitheroe, said: “Getting involved in Scouting is one of thebest decisions I’ve ever made. I get the opportu nity to take part so many dif ferent adventures and I get involved in helping my local
community by giving up my time to help make our com munity a better place.” Julia Kennedy, a Scout
leader from Clitheroe, said: “Being a Scout leader is one of the most fulfilling things I’ve everdone. It’s something I can do on a flexible basis when I have enough time to spare. It’s great helping young people in my local area get the most out of life and watching them de velop week in-week out.”
