Countdown is on to town’s beer festival

Get your pint glasses at the ready for the ninth annual Clitheroe Beer Festival. The event will be staged

at the St Mary’s Centre in Church Street, Clitheroe, on Friday and Saturday, May 16- 17th. The theme of this year’s

festival is natural beauty. This is to coincide with

the 50th anniversary of the Forest of Bowland Area of Outstanding NaturalBeauty. And, as usual, the festival

will be showcasing a great range of ales from around the country. It will be jointly run by

the St Mary’s Centre and the East Lancashire branch of CAMRA and organisers hope hundreds will attend the festival over the two days. The two organisations have forged a strong partner

ship over the past few years and regard the beer festival as a msyor event on the cal endar. The festival will be open

on Friday from l until n pm and on Saturday from noon until l i pm. There will be approxi

mately 70 real ales and 20 ciders/perries plus bottled beers for visitors to try. ■ In addition to this, there

will be a free soft drink for drivers as well as live music on both Friday and Saturday nights.Food will also beavail- able. Entranceis free to CAMRA

and NUS members while all other visitors Will be charged £2 before 6 pm and £3 after 6pm. Last year the event was

opened by actor Ricky Tom linson.

Choir will perform at village fete

Read and Simonstone Village Fete will be held on the green opposite the Stork Hotel on Saturday, June 7th, from noon to 4pm. Proceeds will go to Asthma UK and Macmillan Can cer Support. Entertainment includes a performance by Rossendale Valley Aloud Community Choir at 3pm.

Curtain buyers pull together for charity effort

A giant jazzy curtain sale featuring a donation of John Lewis textiles raised £3,140 for locally-based charity Child Action Northwest. Volunteers hired St Mary’s Centre in Clitheroe during the Ribble Valley Jazz Festival to sell an enormous amount of curtains and cushion covers donated

by manufacturer Herbert Parkinson in Darwen. Hundreds of people took advantage of the bargains and most of the stock was sold within two hours of trading. Fundraiser Harriet Roberts said: “We were thrilled with the result and I’m so grateful to everyone who helped on the

day. People were amazed at the value of the items and were asking when the next sale would be. “As Herbert Parkinson has chosen us as its charity partner for 12 months, I hope we might get another donation like this before the end of the year, so keep your eyes out for news.”
