Probus member Dan Brad bury was welcomed to the lectern when he talked to Clitheroe and District Probus Club about his father’s expe riences leading up to his cap ture in 1942 in Rangoon by the Japanese, and his homecom ing to Colne in 1945 at the end of the war. Dan’s father, a chief mo tor mechanic, and so perhaps
seenbytheenemyasacivilian, ■ was allowed a certain latitude in that he went to the Roman Catholic cathedral every Sun day, and was allowed very re stricted letters home via the Japanese Red Cross. Towards the end of the war he was moved to Changi
jail where the Japanese mili tary detained about 3,000 ci vilians. Postcards from there
were the only mail allowed, the cards carding permitted phrases against which the prisoners put a tick in order to select them. His eventual homecom
ing was almost an anticlimax. Coming out of church into the winter snow in Colne, 1945, Dan, then an eight-year-old al tar boy was struck by a snow ball - his dad was home.
