will commemorate the war’s centenary

Proposals on how to com memorate the 100th anni- versary of the First World War in theRibble Valley have been debated by local coun cillors.

. . In a report to members of

Ribble Valley Borough Coun cil’ Policy and Finance Com mittee, the council’s chief executive Marshal Scott said: “This year sees the-; centenary of the commence ment of World War One. “Such an important mile

stone should not take place without the council remem- ' bering those who lost their lives and also raising aware- ■ ness of the lasting impact which the war has had on - everyone.” .

•. : Members agreed several

ways to mark the anniversa ry. These will include a civic - service to be held on Sunday, August 3rd, at Clitheroe Par ish Church. : An oak tree will also be

planted in every parish in the borough and poppy seeds given to schools and children in the Ribble Valley. Councillors agreed that more detailed plans of how

to commemorate the anni versary should be drawn u p ; by council officers. . The council has said that

it expects the cost of the commemorations to come to around £5,000 and that grant aid is being sought from the Heritage Lottery Fund. Bob Scott, chairman of

■ the Clitheroe branch of the Royal British Legion, said: “I thinkitisasplendidideaand' it’s absolutely right that the council are marking the an-

:niversaryinthisway. . , “It’s a wonderful idea be

cause it’s so important to eve ryone in the country,

v. “The planting of the oak trees would be great because

’ they are such a symbol oflon- gevity and they are some thing that will last for a very longtime.”- . •Anylocalorganisations

and groups that are formu lating plans on how they will commemorate the anniver sary of the First World War can send their news to Ad vertiser and Times reporter. JulieMageeviaemailto julie.* magee@jpress.co.uk
