Youngsters go the distance for Sport Relief Pupils, staff and members of pupils’ families at Pendle

Primary School, Clitheroe, all took partin a sponsored mile- ■ for the charity. Staff and pupils were asked to dress in their long walk for Sport Relief. They completed four circuits

around the perimeter of the ClitheroeCC field to raise money favourite sports clothes for the event, which raised £363.

. J A talk on an unusual topic ■ was' given to members of

. * Clitheroe’s University of the - Third Age in a joint presen tation by Brian Jeffreys and Richard Matthews . ■

■ ■ Their subject was “The

- Coal Mines of Read and Si- monstone”. As the firs t 7 , speaker, Brian Matthews, • • v - pointed out it might come as -

■ . a surprise to many in the au- .> v : dience that there were mines in these villages. However, outlining the history of these pits he said

> that one had only to look at the terraced housing in the

j-. two villages to recognise that theyhadbeenbuiltforwork- ers in the area. . Census records provided

j evidence of the increased ' number of miners living there in Victorian times. Using a variety of maps and charts to illustrate the geol ogy of the region, he showed the extent of coal seams

■ in the wider Burnley and district coal fields and ex-

■ --■ plained that open cast min ing had gone on locally since the 1600s. With greater technolo

gy and the sinking of shafts from the 1840s onwards, it

became a growth industry furnishing fuel for the mills

and factories of the region; - f In the second part of the presentation, Richard Mat-

, thews enlarged oh the land ownership, outlining the problems caused by mines owned by one family inter- connectingwith those ofan-. other. '

7 , ■ '■ '■H e showed evidence of

- industrial archaeologyin the remains of pumping houses, • waterwheels etc. which were of particular interest to' him as an engineer. ,

■ ■ . His slides featured ob

jects found during excava tion, including a piece of rusted chain whichhadbeen used to fasten round the waist of a child as young as seven, employed to pull the wagons on a narrow under ground rail- a reminder of the harsh conditions of the time.

- A vote of thanks was

given to the speakers, both members of the Read and Si- monstone Archive. The U3A’s next presen tation is at St Mary’s Centre

' next Tuesday, April 8th, at 2-3opm and will be on art nouveau.
