Ready, steady, See the garden grow

WRITTEN BY

JOHN FOLEY

11 of a sudden gardens and plants have sprung back

-into life and it’s

only now that we can see all the plants in the flow

er beds popping through again ready for the summer ahead! With 2012 being the year of the rain, let’s hope for more promising weather this year, this is certainly a good way to start as the weather has gradually improved and this has allowed plants to climatise more, last year magnolias were in and out of flower within a week and by the time April came along most of the tulips and daffodils had finished flow ering, well not this year, all the plants are taking their time and now with the daf

fodils in full flower it really feels like spring has arrived and now is the time to get back out there and plan for the summer ahead, and let’s hope it’s a good one! Now taking into account the weather of last year there was lots of jobs in the gar den that may have got for gotten about and at present we are in the middle of the potting season at the nurs ery, but in your own garden you can be getting on with re-potting of pot plants, for the fact that any shrubs or perennials growing in pots don’t have chance to spread their roots out as far as they should and need to be given the food that they require to look healthy and flourish, make sure that you tease out some of the old soil and

re-pot into a John Innes No. 3 compost as this is loam based and holds the nutri ents and also the water that the plant needs. If your pot plant is in its second year

then just give it a top dress

ing with some pellet-based fertiliser.

Also at the nursery we are starting to hold a series of gardening courses on a. range of different topics, the new tea room also has a lecture room where we can accommodate a group of 30 and hold either a talk about the plants or maybe

even something a bit more hands-on later in the year

like how to make a holly wreath!

You can find more details

about the courses on our website but we are cer tainly worth a visit and we are cooking a full range of ' food from homemade soups

right through to Lancashire hotpot! What more could you want but a day out to your local nursery to sort out all your

gardening queries followed by a delicious treat in the

newly built “garden kitch en” !

azaleas to encourage dis plays of flowers for next year, water in the fertilizer in dry spells.

4 -Pests

Watch out for pests emerg ing in the garden now the temperature has risen, you don’t want those prize hos- tas looking like a net curtain this year!

5 - Feed Tulips and Daffo dils

Feed them to encourage flow ers next year, it really does make a difference and leave it until autumn to divide and replant.

6 - SowSeeds Sow annual flowers into the

bordersforlong-lastingsum- mer colour. 7-

Pinch out the new growth buds to encourage side shooting and bushier plants.
