In 1948 it was decided to turn the tower into a museum and it was fi nally opened in 1951/52.

Fate intervened during the Second World War when Mrs Hough’s mother died and her father was called up. This allowed her and her sister to move to live with their aunt and uncle who subsequently moved to the tower where her uncle became the caretaker in 1948. She recalled a very hap py childhood with lots of singing and miisic, around the piano and harmonium at week ends with all the family. She described her care free life there. How her aunt took great pride in furnishing the place with the comforts of the day, for example, coconut matting and peg rugs for the floors, ash-pit lava tory, wearing clogs to go to school, a slopstone in the wash-house, milk kits (churns), black twist for chewing (not smok ing) by her uncle etc.

comed members and introduced Mrs Doreen Hough who gave a fas cinating talk entitled “My Childhood at Tur- ton Tower”. She gave a brief outline of the his tory of the tower, which was originally a lookout tower dating back to 1199. Seven generations of one family lived there culminating in a bad debt cleared by Hum phrey Chetham’s pur chase of the property. He went on to be a great benefactor locally as well as setting up Cheth am’s School of Music in Manchester. The last owner. Lady Lena Knowles, donated the tower to Turton UDC who used it initially for council business and employed a caretaker.
