CHESS buffs in-Wad dington are honing their skills with new equip ment thanks to funding: from Lancashire Coun-. ty Council. The county authori

ty’s “Parish Champion”, County Coun. Mike' Otter, has donated £100 , after Waddington Parish

, Council asked; “Can we have a cheque mate?” It made the request on

behalf of Waddington Chess Club, which has used the money-together with cash from the parish council - to.buy 10 tourna ment standard chess sets and 10 game clocks. The equipment will help r

people of all ages learn to play chess and, if they want to, take part in tourna ments and compete in the local chess league.' Waddington Chess Club

has-been running since November last year and has more than 20 mem- - hers. The club is growing ; in popularity, particularly with young people and this funding means that even

said: “I t’s-important to provide a range of activi ties for people of all ages, particularly in smaller vil lages such as Waddington which aren’t as well con nected with major towns. “Parish councils and lo

cal clubs play an important role in this and I’m pleased to help fund Waddington Chess Club. The county council will continue to work closely with parishes to improve quality of life for people.” Carol Baird, clerk to

-Waddington Parish Coun cil, said; “Chess is becom ing popular here in Wad dington, particularly with local kids, and the chess club is doing a superb job. ■ “It’s particularly keen to encourage people to take part in competitions, but has been struggling be cause it didn’t have equip ment.” .

Joe Petrie established

Waddington Chess Club with his, sjepson Aidan McCormack, a member of the Lancashire Under-14s Chess team.

. Joe said: “We wanted to get more young people in the area involved in the game and since we started • last year, we’re pleased we now have more than 20 members. “We started off using

older equipment, and didn’t have any chess clocks, so the funding for the new boards, pieces and clocks is great news. “We hope to use the

equipment to introduce more people to the game, encourage them to take part in competitions and encourage people who no longer play to take up the game again.” ■ The club meets at 7-15 p.m. on Mondays at Wad dington Social Club, Clit- lieroe Road, Waddington. New members welcome. It competes in the Central Lancashire League and in its first season finished mid-table of division four.
